If there's a naval history buff on your Christmas list, getting tickets to one of these sails might make his or her holiday.
Four replica tall ships will engage in 18th century naval skirmishes, complete with mock cannon fire, Dec. 26 and 29 off the coast of San Pedro.
The Lady Washington, Hawaiian Chieftain and Los Angeles' own Exy Johnson and Irving Johnson will be the tall-masted ships taking part in the three-hour battle sails (2-5 p.m. each day).
The ships maneuver for the best position and fire a cannon with gunpowder - both real - but with no cannon balls.
Guests can participate by helping to raise a sail, sing a sea chantey or by taking the helm, depending on the conditions at sea.
Tickets are $40 and $60. Go to http://bit.ly/VbSQ84 for details.
To ride on board the Lady Washington or Hawaiian Chieftan, call 800-200-5239. Tickets for space aboard the Exy Johnson and Irving Johnson are available at www.lamitopsail.org or by calling 310-833-6055.
The ships also will be available for walk-on tours from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1. Tickets are not required but $3 donations are requested.
