My mom worked for Matson for almost 25 years when Matson was on the Los Angeles side, off of New Dock Street, north of Ocean Blvd and east of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and west of the Commodore Heim Bridge lift bridge; (by the way, scheduled for dismantling by CalTrans in the future, heads-up for any bridge fans and photographers.) YOu can still see the old Matson Terminal there.

Matson is now located on Pier C Street, just off of Pico Blvd in the Port of Long Beach. The R.J. Pfeiffer is still in the container biz. You can track her here! http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?MMSI=366576000

I'll be posting photos of Matson memorabilia and photos in the near future!

Here's the information from the Alexander-Baldwin Company, regarding the new stamp!

Cheers!

TO ALL MATSON EMPLOYEES:

Matson’s Containership R. J. Pfeiffer Featured in USPS Stamp Series Saluting U.S. Merchant Marine

An iconic photo of the Matson containership R.J. Pfeiffer served as a model for one of four new U.S. Postal Service stamps to be released on July 28 saluting the U.S. Merchant Marine. The Matson ship is shown passing Diamond Head and represents the containership era of American maritime history. In addition to the containership stamp, the new series includes images of a clipper ship, auxiliary steamship and Liberty ship. These four types of vessels have played important roles in the growth and security of the commercial maritime industry since the country’s founding. The U.S. Merchant Marine stamps are being issued as Forever stamps, which are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. A dedication ceremony will be held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York on July 28.

“Matson is honored to have one of our ships featured in this commemorative stamp series,” said Matt Cox, president. “As one of the leading U.S.-flag carriers in our industry that had an important role in pioneering containerization in the Pacific, Matson is very proud to be part of this tribute.”

The R. J. Pfeiffer was built in 1992 and named after the former Chairman of Matson and Alexander & Baldwin, Inc.
