The Neighborhood Councils of Los Angeles

I’m sorry, but I just have to laugh at all the contentious rhetoric I read (primarily on Facebook) about the Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils in San Pedro. There are currently 97 Neighborhood Councils within the city limits, each with a $42K annual budget and a corresponding Department of Neighborhood Empowerment within City Hall. "Department of Neighborhood Empowerment," now that’s funny... if it weren't so sad.  Let’s see, 97 X $42,000.  That’s over 4 million a year; what a waste. In 1999,…See More

The Homeless - Hobos, Tramps And Bums

They have all been around for what seems like forever and are all technically homeless.  The homeless problem in America is not new.In the age of political correctness, even the panhandler on the street corner may get offended if you call him a bum when he considers himself a hobo or a tramp. There are definite differences in the…See More

United We Stand - Divided We Fall

The disjunctive Facebook rantings I’ve read this week between what are apparently rival support groups involved in improving the quality of life in San Pedro serve no useful purpose. Serving food to the homeless in a park is now a bad thing? Were there permits issued for the function; probably not.  Did the organizers provide clean up of the park afterwards?  Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t.  I don’t know the real answers to any of these questions. So what if they didn’t get permits, so what if…See More

Re-Engineering Policing

Bob Dylan wrote The Times They Are a-Changin’ back in 1964 and the inevitable trend still continues today. Fast-forward to the troubling times of 2015 and community policing policies are being quickly revised to meet the new and more dangerous threat of domestic and international terrorism.Entire police departments like the 34,000 uniformed men and women of the NYPD are being completely retrained on the tactics used to answer calls…See More

A Generation Lost

I don't know when we lost America, but we did. Maybe it was the 70's.Back in the 60's there was still a real zeal and a passionate burning feeling about America by Americans for America.  We were still proud and were willing to stand up against unjust wars and corporate greed.  Many felt so strongly they burned their draft cards and defected to Canada. There were more thing's…See More

The Great Social Divide

Facebook seemed like a good idea when it started back in 2004; but I’m not so sure anymore. I can’t imagine that Zukerberg ever dreamed his software application would create such a stir with its lengthy tentacles reaching the world’s corners and consumers far and wide.Who could have foreseen the power social media would bring…See More

On Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., the Institute of Musical Arts welcomes back our very own Storyteller Barbara H. Clark in “Was It Destiny?”, a solo performance of original stories. Barbara, a multi-award winning storyteller, never shies away from challenging issues.  In this show, she asks the following: Do you believe in destiny? Many people believe that certain events are inevitable, just meant to be. I always had my doubts about it. But, recently I had an occasion to look back…See More
