Joan Marie Wainwright died peacefully on July 3, 2023, just after sunrise surrounded by her family. In the weeks prior to her death, she acknowledged that her only remaining ailment was old age, having battled chronic pain for most of her adult life. Her family and loved ones, including the attentive staff at Morningstar Boise, cared for her, hovered over her and paid their respects to a great woman.

She was 93.

Joan was born December 11, 1929, in San Pedro, California, to George L. Wallace and Bernice C. (Reilly) Wallace. George was in the merchant marine, having run away to sea at age fourteen, and Bernice having dropped out of UCLA (University of California Southern Campus at the time) to marry him.

Joan Wallace was a typical Southern California girl – spending her summers at Cabrillo Beach
with her girlfriends cultivating a tan. She attended Mary Star of the Sea Grammar School,
developing rich friendships that lasted her lifetime. She went on to St. Anthony’s High School in
Long Beach, where she served as student body vice-president, graduating with honors in 1947,
before completing her education at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles.

While in college, her father became a captain with the Pacific Far East Lines. He often invited his collegiate daughter to accompany him on board as his ship made its way north from Long
Beach through the often rough seas to San Francisco. Joan would invite schoolmates along for
the ride. Many relationships and marriages sprung from these passages as the clever and
beautiful college girls found themselves shipmates with the dashing and exotic ship’s officers. In
no time Captain Wallace’s Second Mate, Norman Wainwright, fell for the boss’s daughter, and
she for him. Among other things, she said she was impressed by the way he kept his shoes
polished. They were engaged shortly after in 1950. Any apprehension Joan might have had
about marrying a sailor was overridden by love. In 1951, weeks after her graduation with a
major in History, they wed in Los Angeles.

After setting up housekeeping in Long Beach, Norman went back to sea, and Joan completed
her teaching credential’s fifth-year course work while pregnant with their first child. When
Elizabeth was born the following year, it was Joan’s grandmother who drove her to the hospital.
That was Norman’s last trip to sea for a long time. Liz was followed in short order by Margaret
and then David and then Robert five years later and Paula shortly after that. The family has
many happy memories from their days living in San Pedro. There were beach and tide pool
trips, Angels games and holiday gatherings with Joan’s cousins’ families. But in 1964 Norman
became restless, having postponed a lifelong dream of piloting ships. The couple agreed he
would abandon his successful career with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and return to
sea. With her husband away, Joan proved herself a competent single mother, managing the
household and family, dispensing love (either the outward type or the hard Irish version), and
swift discipline when necessary. With Norman away at sea there was no “wait until your father
comes home.”

In 1967 the family moved to Stockton, where Norman had an opportunity to pilot on the San
Joaquin River. Joan packed up with a stiff upper lip (after all, Stockton was the ‘country’) and
she carried on.

In 1971 she began volunteering at St. Mary’s High School, then in 1972 accepted a position as
educational coordinator in the school department of the Catholic Diocese of Stockton. In 1980
Joan was asked to become Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese, upon acceptance she
became the first laywoman school superintendent in the history of American Catholic Schools.
With a steady hand, she led the diocesan transition from an education system that was led and
staffed by clergy to one that by necessity was now led by dedicated lay men and women. She
retired from the Chancery in 1992. Joan served with the Western Association of Schools and
Colleges on their accreditation staff from 1986 until 1994, traveling to schools throughout the
country and the Pacific Islands. She received many awards but found her greatest professional
joy in processes and people. Joan Wainwright was a born administrator. The source of her
power was silence, the first cousin to listening.

Before his death in 1998, she and Norman traveled abroad extensively. They took particular
delight in Northern Italy. There was a little Italophile in each of them. After Norman’s death,
Joan moved to Boise in 2007 to be closer to her family.

As the mother of teenagers and college kids living at home during the summers, Joan always
waited up late until all her “chickens” were in the door, sometimes deep into the night. Curled
up in a club chair she appeared to be reading, but she was brooding, nesting like all good
mothers of all species do – accounting for her flock. She died knowing they were all safe and
well.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Norman, daughter Paula, brothers Bobby and
Steven, and her parents George and Bernice Wallace. She is survived by her four children, Liz
Ierulli (Ken) of Portland, Oregon, Margaret Henbest (Mike), of Boise, Idaho, Dave (Sue) of
Alameda, California and Rob (Caroline) of Novato, California, and her sister Carole Patridge of
Portland. Nana was an active and loyal grandmother to Ryan Henbest (Lynne), Dr. Daniel
Henbest (Melissa), Allison Hanna (Byron), John Wainwright, Kevin Henbest (Annie), Joe
Wainwright, Matthew (Madeline) Wainwright, Andrew Wainwright and Brooke Wainwright.
She was proud and joyful of their pursuits and adventures. She kept close track of great-grandchildren Lyric, Jude, Rhen, Inez, Beau, Hudson, Vera and Lochlin.
A funeral mass will be held for Joan at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Boise, Idaho on
Wednesday, July 26 at 11:00 AM. Her burial and graveside ceremony will take place at San
Gabriel Cemetery, San Gabriel, California, on September 15 at noon, with a reception luncheon
to follow.
Donald George Ezell 1939~2021 Celebration of Life Service Harbor Christian Center Saturday , April 24, 2021tag:sanpedronewspilot.com,2021-04-23:6389356:BlogPost:1935892021-04-23T00:00:00.000ZSan Pedro News Pilothttp://sanpedronewspilot.com/profile/Leimert

Don, aka Pastor Don, loved and knew Jesus personally and desired that all would know Him as he did. As pastor of Harbor Christian Center in Wilmington since 1986, his heartfelt sermons reached thousands not just locally but across the world through church services and live broadcasts online, resulting in many lives changed. The people experienced breakthroughs, healings, restorations but what touched his heart greatly was to see the transformation in those who surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ through salvation. He found much joy in the flock the Lord entrusted to him when he witnessed their purpose being fulfilled.

His vision was to see the South Bay changed through the hope of Christ along with the manifestation of miracles, signs and wonders.

His legacy and hope continues to go forth in the passing of the baton. Harbor Christian Center remains dedicated to fulfilling the vision not just in Wilmington, San Pedro, Harbor City, Lomita, Carson, Torrance, Long Beach but to the surrounding communities as well.Pastor Don partnered with other churches for various events and had many pastor connections who shared the same vision as he did.

We will miss him greatly but rejoice in knowing He is in the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Funeral Service will be held at Harbor Christian Center, 1551 N. Wilmington Boulevard, Wilmington, CA 90744@ 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24.

Shane Goldmacher of the National Journal reports it was no accident that Janice Hahn, former San Pedro City Councilwoman for Los Angles and current South Bay US representative, got major face time at the Democratic National Convention.

Hahn was one of a number of women Dems whotook the Democratic National Convention stage Tuesday night - which was a surprise, Goldmacher reported, because the leadership rarely places favorites against incumbents.

Because of redistricting, Hahn will face Long Beach dem Laura Richardson for California's 44th Congresional District this November. Richardson missed the photo-op and wasn't on stage.

"It's little secret in Washington that the Democratic leadership is rooting for a Hahn win. Richardson was reprimanded in August for ethical misconduct and had to pay a $10,000 fine, after facing a previous ethics inquiry," Goldmacher writes.

9:00 AM on Wednesday July 4th - Presentations by local and Korean community leaders. Assembled guests and dignitaries will lead the audience in reciting the names of the 13 original American states. As they read the names the honored representatives of the San Pedro and Korean Communities will strike a battering ram into the massive bell, ringing once for each state. The Korean Bell is rung officially on only four other occasions each year - Korean Independence Day (August 15th) Constitution Day (September 21st), New Year's Eve and Korean American Day (January 13th).

Angels Gate Park is located at 3601 South Gaffey Street in San Pedro. The free event has been conducted every year since the Korean Bell's installation in 1976. - via the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce

18th Street Tradition
Join Vince and Dee Villa for the grand finale of what has become a quarter-century-old hometown tradition. This will be the 26th year the couple has invited neighbors - and anyone else - to gather on the sidewalk in front of their home at 1153 W. 18th St. to participate in a simple flag-raising ceremony to start the holiday.

They've attracted as many as 300 people in the past, from neighbors sipping morning coffee to area lawmakers. Guests are asked to arrive by 7:45 a.m. The call to colors will be at 7:55 a.m. Followed by singing, refreshments and time to meet and visit with neighbors. This is likely the last time the couple will present the event, at least on a large-scale basis.

Cabrillo Beach
Gourmet food trucks will be on hand, and flyovers and other tributes will be held from 4-9 p.m. at Cabrillo Beach, 3720 Stephen M. White Drive, culminating with a 20-minute fireworks show from an offshore barge, all to the accompaniment of recorded patriotic and classical music.

Palos Verdes Estates

The Palos Verdes Independence Day Committee will hold its 51st annual celebration at Malaga Cove School, 300 Paseo del Mar, Palos Verdes Estates. The free event starts at 9:30 a.m. and will feature live patriotic music, a decorated children's bicycle parade, a puppet show, apple pie contest and games. This year's guest speaker is Richard Riordan, former mayor of Los Angeles and former state secretary of education. Every year we head to Cheviot Hills Park, on Motor just east of Pico, where we have a fantastic view of the fireworks sent skyward from Hillcrest Country Clubright across the street. I've been told there is a great view from the roof of the Westside Pavillion as well.

Our group kick's off the celebration with a multi-generational game of kick ball and then we picnic at the park. It is a great local tradition. Hope to see you there. Fireworks begin at 9:00.

Thanks for Councilman Paul Koretz for passing along the following tips:

Fire Chief Brian L. Cummings, Los Angeles Fire Department, shares the following information precisely because illegal fireworks are such a tremendous concern for the LAFD and the city as a whole:

Fire Chief Brian L. Cummings wants you and your family to have a fun and safe 4 th of July. The best way to do that is to be prepared and know your local laws.

Firework Statistics

The use or sale of ALL FIREWORKS including safe and sane have been illegal in the City of Los Angeles since 1942 (except at approved shows).
The LAFD Anti-Fireworks campaign began in 1982.
The 4th of July is one of the busiest days of the year for emergency services.
Most emergency calls are for fires and injuries caused by people using illegal fireworks.
Most firecracker injuries happen to the eyes, hands, head, and face areas.
The highest numbers of injuries are firecrackers (26%), rockets (21%), and sparklers (11%).
Almost half of all people injured were children under the age of 15.
According to the United States eye registry, more bystanders are injured by fireworks than by the people who set them off.
Sparklers can heat up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit (that is hot enough to melt gold).
Possessing fireworks is a misdemeanor, punishable with a fine of $1,000 and/or 1 year in jail.

Fireworks Safety Rules

IF YOU SEE A FIRE, CALL 9-1-1.
Never experiment with or make your own fireworks.
Never let anyone touch or pick up a dud firecracker that is lying on the ground. (contact the proper authority)
REMEMBER, animals have very sensitive hearing and can be stressed or frightened due to noise from fireworks. So:
Keep your pets indoors with the windows closed and the air conditioner on.
Turn on the television or radio to block some of the noise.

The goal of the LAFD Anti-Fireworks campaign is to:
Reduce the number of fire and injuries from fireworks.
Remind citizens that all fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.
Encourage citizens to attend a public fireworks display.

PREVENT A NIGHTMARE ON THE 4th OF JULY. STAY AWAY FROM FIREWORKS. PLAY IT SAFE.ATTEND A PUBLIC FIREWORKS DISPLAY.

That's why Los Angeles Animal Services and that department's General Manager, Brenda F. Barnette, have provided the following tip sheet:

FIREWORKS ARE NO FUN FOR PETS!
Pet Safety Tips for 4th of July

Make this Independence Day fun and SAFE for your pets! Some people love big gatherings and loud noises – but that can be very frightening for our pets.
Here are some Pet Safety Tips for Independence Day:

• PLAN AHEAD
Make sure your pet is microchipped and that the registration has your current address. In addition, make sure your dog is wearing a license tag. These two simple steps help us reunite families if a pet does get lost.

You can contact any of our L.A. Animal Services Shelters and schedule an appointment to have their companion animal microchipped. The cost for the public is $25.00 per animal. Most veterinary clinics also offer microchipping.

• KEEP PETS INDOORS
Keep your pets inside. If you are having guests over, keep pets in a room that is off-limits to guests, with plenty of water and food.

• CREATE A CALMING ENVIRONMENT
Surround pets with their favorite toys and other familiar objects. Play soothing music and keep the room as quiet as possible by closing doors, windows, and blinds.

• KEEP AWAY FROM FIREWORKS
Even if your pet does not seem obviously upset by fireworks, they can still cause harm to pets. Avoid potential burns, injuries, or possible ingestion by keeping all pets out of the vicinity of fireworks.

ADOPT NOW and Help Us Save MORE Animals
The fourth of July is a time shelter staff knows that we will have a sudden influx of lost and frightened animals. Our shelters are already over crowded. If you are considering adopting, please visit our shelters and adopt NOW or consider fostering a great dog or cat! They are counting on us.
