Humpin' Happy in San Pedro

Participation, family and togetherness played out this entire weekend in San Pedro where lots of events got everyone out.

First Thursday kicked the weekend off early, followed by a comedy fundraiser for local non-profits at Croatian Hall where Mike Marino entertained. On Saturday, the Corner Store had an Easter Egg…

New Goodwill Store Under Construction

There is a new Goodwill Store under construction on the top level of The Terraces, along Western Avenue, in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Notices on the door state that there will be job interviews beginning on April 19 and they will be conducted at other outlets.

I don't know when the store will open.

Yes, it's not in "San Pedro" but to many of us older Eastview residents, our hearts remain firmly loving San Pedro.

Pastor's Message: Fourth Sunday of Lent

In my first assignment as a priest I regularly visited an elderly man in his nineties, Jose Holguin. Jose insisted on playing a little jazz piano after I would give him communion. At his age he could not hit all of the proper keys on the piano, but you could still recognize the tune and understand that once this was a very good musician. One day, I was called to the hospital to anoint Jose before a serious operation. When I arrived he was being wheeled into the operating room. The…

Can Facebook and Twitter predict the winner of political campaigns?

Here in San Pedro, we are in the middle of two very popular election campaigns. One is for fun and serves as a fundraiser for local non-profits, where San Pedroans will choose an "Honorary Mayor," while the other is a more consequential congressional campaign, a race for the 36th Congressional District Seat in Congress.

As many know, there are five local citizens that are vying for the Honorary Mayor of San Pedro position, a bi-annual event sponsored by the… Continue

Omelette and Waffle Shop my breakfast stop in San Pedro

In LA when you see people waiting outside a restaurant it can mean a lot of different things.

Of course there's the smokers. They often make you think a place is happening, only to find out they are just loitering.

Then there are the traditions. Places like Titos in Culver City or Pinks on La Brea, eateries people go to because they grew up…

Pastor's Message: Third Sunday of Lent

Third Sunday of Lent: Ex 17:3-7; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8; Jn 4:5-42

A new pastor was out visiting his parishioners one Saturday afternoon. All went well until he came to one house. Although it was obvious someone was home, no one came to the door, even after he had knocked several times. Finally, he pulled out his card, wrote,…

SOMETHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN: WELCOME BACK SAN PEDRO NEWS PILOT

In the summer of 1994, as a journalism student and wannabe photographer at El Camino College in Torrance, I made a photograph that was published on the front page of the local newspaper.

The photo was of the 10-foot statue of Mary which is mounted on top of the Mary Star of the Sea tower, her arms outstretched toward the Port of Los Angeles.

A gift from the parish fisherman in 1961, the statue was brought down to earth for restoration, making it available to view up close for… Continue

San Pedro High Football Opens 2019 With Shutout Victory

TORRANCE - A much more likable result to begin a new high school football season. In the 2018 season opener for San Pedro High football, penalties impeded progress for the Pirates and was the deciding factor in keeping them out of the end zone during an eventual 7-6 home loss to North High of Torrance.
