Los Angeles: Where did our city name originate?

"El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula" (Yes, that's the original.) I've lived here almost half my life and I did not know. I never took the time to investigate until now.

In 1769, a Franciscan friar who was exploring California named a river "Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula".  In English it means "Our Lady of the Angels of Porciúncula".  That was just the name of the river.

Now for the city.  As a settlement was established,…

Ports of Call development and the San Pedro Art Association

Ports O' Call is being re-developed. What about current tenants? Most will be allowed to stay until the end of 2014.

Is it OK for a non-profit to also remain, for now, under an agreement set years ago, and previously honored?

I attended yesterday's Harbor Commission meeting, and while the SPAA was not the only tenant speaking up, here's a tidbit about what's going on with their discussion with port officials, from the Daily Breeze.…

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time:  Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; 1 Cor 10:31-11:1; Mk 1:40-45

Throughout its history, leprosy has been feared and misunderstood. For a long time leprosy was thought to be a hereditary disease, a curse, or a punishment from God. Before and even after the discovery of its biological cause, leprosy patients were stigmatized and shunned. For example, in Europe during the Middle Ages, leprosy sufferers had to wear special clothing, ring…

Christmas Message

December 25, 2011

Christmas Day

Today we celebrate one of the great mysteries of our faith, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, became flesh, humbling himself to take upon our human nature. The world celebrates this day. Even those without faith decorate their houses with lights, place a tree in their house and buy each other gifts.…

Third Sunday of Advent: Is 61:1-2a, 10- 11; 1 Thes 5:16-24; Jn 1:6-8, 19-28

As a priest for over twenty-one years I have had the privilege of being a part of many different families, sharing in their joys and sorrows. Priests are called more often for the sorrows, but on occasions we are also some of the first to share in the joyful news. That was the case a couple of years ago…
