Mysterious Cat Paintings On San Pedro Buildings Stir Passionate Debate

Publisher's note: Donna Littlejohn of the Daily Breeze wrote a great story about the cat paintings that are disappearing:

At the San Pedro News Pilot we do want to share and give credit to all the outlets who care enough to cover our neighborhood.

The story begins: "Some call it vandalism. Some call it art.

This much is certain: The life-size black-and-white stenciled cats cropping up on commercial block walls all over San Pedro are making some people smile. ...

The “Mysterious San Pedro Cat” figures, as one resident refers to them, began appearing a few months ago. Some have been painted over but others keep popping up — in alleys, on drive-through restaurant perimeters and on retaining walls around shopping centers, parks, and streets."

Heather Caine noted the paintings more than a month ago, shared the images and the fact some have been painted over.

Street Artist Paints A Cat By 6th St Car Park

Somebody has been painting cats around San Pedro. This one is on a wall by the 6th St car park. I had to look twice because I thought it was real. Some more were painted on Gaffey St but they have been painted over.

What do you think about these whimsical figures that adorn plain walls?

Street Artist Paints Large Cat In Front Of Friendship Park

This painting can easily be seen driving down Western Ave in front of Friendship Park. The nearest cross street is 9th and Western and close to the space where vendors sell bonsais and fruit.
