In the prior two seasons, the San Pedro High boys basketball team would open off the CIF-Los Angeles City Section playoffs by going overtime to defeat Bell in 2010, and then Kennedy of Granada Hills last season. Their first round opponent this season, Jordan of Los Angeles, took the Pirates to overtime before losing earlier in the year.
San Pedro wasted little time in taking care of business for four quarters the second time around.
Only trailing 7-6 with 5:32 left in the first quarter after opening off the game scoring the first six points, the host Pirates would leave no doubt, taking a lead as big as 32 points before finally topping Jordan, 78-61, in the first round of the City Section Division II playoffs. Eighth-seeded San Pedro (15-13) would serve notice with a 26-7 run that carried into the second quarter to knock out the No.9 Bulldogs (11-16) early.
Senior guard Kenny Potter would lead San Pedro with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, while senior forward Daniel O'Brien would score a career-high 13 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior forward Dashawn Brown scored 9 points, senior guard Adrian Herrera had 8 points, and senior center Marquis Luke grabbed 15 rebounds.
San Pedro, who defeated Jordan, 73-68 in an overtime war during the Huntington Park Tournament on January 5, would force numerous turnovers with a relentless full-court press throughout the second quarter, taking a 44-18 halftime lead on an amazing rebound putback by sophomore forward Quincy Thomas right before the buzzer.
Coach John Bobich played the entire team as the game play got a little sloppy on both sides during garbage time, and the highlight of the night came when sophomore guard Isaac Stell, a call-up from the junior varsity team, would score the game's final basket with 36 seconds left, drawing a loud cheer from the Pirate faithful.
The night got started when the Star Spangled Banner was played through the loud system... it was kind of emotional considering it was the amazing rendition sung by the late Whitney Houston from Super Bowl XXV in 1991.
Senior guard Marquise Harris scored a game-high 32 points to lead Jordan.
San Pedro will move on to the quarterfinals, where they will travel to face top-seeded El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, a 62-21 winner over No.16 Van Nuys, on Wednesday at 7pm.
