It all seemed so great for San Pedro High girls soccer.

The Pirates were comfortably up 3-0 on visiting Birmingham of Lake Balboa in a critical nonleague game at the John M. & Muriel Olguin Campus, with goals by Lauren Mayeda, Joanna Perone and Ashley Lopez in the first 19 minutes, but as suddenly as that scoring binge came, the Patriots came back with a flurry of their own.

The end result: a 3-3 tie.

First, Birmingham scored seconds after Lopez's goal, and then late in the second half, a questionable penalty kick followed by a blown offsides call led to two goals during the final ten minutes that allowed Birmingham (2-0-1) to survive and remain unbeaten after three games this season.

The end result left a bitter taste in the mouth of San Pedro (2-3-1), who was coming off an impressive 3-1 win at Bishop Montgomery of Torrance that ended a three-game losing streak.

Freshman goalie Taylor Miller was solid in her 60 minutes of work, stopping three shots while allowing only one goal in the first half. Senior goalie Natalie Martin was inserted in during the 60th minute and she also made two saves for San Pedro, who will next face Beverly Hills at home in another nonleague game on Wednesday.
