The Port Of Los Angeles High boys and girls basketball teams played their opening CIF-Los Angeles City Section Small Schools Division playoff games on the same day, at the same site, against the same opponent, and both got their desired result.
Sophomore Angela Wade scored 19 points to lead the No.14 POLA girls to a 55-30 victory over No.19 USC-Magnet at Peck Park. Freshman Mayan Rodriguez and junior Noemi Rodriguez each scored 8 points.
The Lady Bears (12-9) will next face third-seeded Sherman Oaks CES on the road Thursday in the second round.
Meanwhile, the tenth-seeded POLA boys team would jump to a big lead early before eventually holding off No.23 USC-Magnet, 50-41 to follow up on the girls victory at Peck Park.
Jordan Bonner would lead the way with 17 points, seven rebounds and 4 steals for the Crosstown League champions. Joe Morgan had six points and six steals, and Bradley Washington would grab 20 rebounds for the Polar Bears (16-6).
This is the first playoff victory ever for the boys team, who will next travel to face No.7 Huntington Park College Ready in the second round on Friday.
Congratulations to both teams.
