POLA's Florez, SP's Valverde: All-City Basketball Selections

Last week, the CIF-Los Angels City Section honored a chosen few of the best prep boys and girls basketball players for 2015-2016, and two of San Pedro's finest were selected.

For the second year in a row, San Pedro High girls basketball junior guard/forward Deanna Valverde garnered an All-City selection, only this time as an All-City Division 1 selection.

The San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Basketball Co-MVP adds to last year's All-City Division 2 selection after helping lead the Lady Pirates to a 19-11 season, a third straight third place Marine League finish, and a quarterfinals berth in the playoffs.

Valverde cemented her place in the first round against Los Angeles CES by drilling six three-point bombs for all 18 points in a 53-52 overtime victory for San Pedro on February 17, while also notching 10 rebounds and five assists. It's also to be believed that Valverde is the first two-time All-City selection for San Pedro girls basketball in three decades.

Also, Port Of Los Angeles High boys basketball senior Damian Florez becomes the first from the program in three years to garner an All-City selection in Division 4 after helping guide the Polar Bears (10-13 overall) to their first playoff berth since the 2012-2013 season.
