SPHS Football Is Still Unbeaten After Road Win At Fairfax

LOS ANGELES - The San Pedro High football team knew full well coming in to Fairfax High School that the Lions were going to be ready for them.

For starters, the Pirates came in with an unbeaten record, and secondly, Fairfax has lost four in a row to San Pedro, twice in each of the last two seasons, including two straight first round CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoff eliminations. Quite frankly, the Lions were tired of it and wanted nothing more than to put the first blemish on San Pedro's record.

It didn't happen.

San Pedro's vintage running attack was clicking on all cylinders and didn't lose a fumble for the first time in five games while the passing game, although limited, was also accurate as the Pirates would defeat Fairfax, 42-25 in a nonleague game that gave them a perfect 5-0 mark going into next Friday's Marine League opening showdown at Narbonne.

Senior running back Chris Alvidrez, who had lost a fumble in each of the last two weeks that were returned for touchdowns in victories over Culver City and University, went back to basics and ran for 133 yards on 18 carries and a pair of touchdowns for San Pedro, who moved the ball seemingly at will all night against the Lions (1-4 overall), only turning it over once when junior quarterback Jacob Miller threw an interception early in the second quarter.

Fairfax would score on the game's opening possession when junior wide receiver Kenny Allen burned San Pedro senior defensive back Francisco Flores on a curl route, and shook off Flores' tackle and sprinted to the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown reception and a 6-0 lead, but the two-point conversion pass failed with 9:15 left in the first quarter.

San Pedro countered with an 8-play, 66-yard drive on their opening possession, all on runs, capped off by a one-yard sneak for a touchdown by Miller, putting the Pirates ahead for good, 7-6 with 4:13 remaining in the quarter.

The Pirates would increase their lead to 21-6 in the second quarter on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs by Alvidrez and Miller (his second), but a 90-yard touchdown run by Fairfax junior running back Ramses Hernandez with 32 seconds left in the second quarter cut their deficit down to 21-13 before halftime.

San Pedro would hammer the Lions on the first two possessions of the second half to go up 35-13 on Alvidrez's 10-yard touchdown and a nine-yard touchdown pass from Miller to junior wide receiver Antonio Frazier, the latter score coming with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter. Fairfax would inch closer to 35-25 on a 38-yard touchdown reception from Allen and a three-yard touchdown run from Hernandez with 6:07 left in the fourth quarter.

The Lions' tried an onside kick but San Pedro recovered, and was able to shave off nearly four minutes to seal the deal on senior RB/DB Anthony Bolden's one-yard touchdown run with 2:19 to play, which Bolden set up with his own 22-yard run two previous plays before on that same drive.

San Pedro knows that every team in the Marine League will be looking to take them down from here on out, but finishing nonleague play unbeaten is not easy, and the Pirates were able to accomplish that feat for the first time since the 2011 team that went on to post a perfect regular season and a 12-1 overall record.

Next week, the Pirates will try to end Narbonne's 11-game league win streak.

The Jewish Community Weaponized Hip Hop Against Black People

Is it not yet painfully obvious that the so-called European Jewish community has profited off of the destruction of African American families all across the world? Are we really going to take the stance that conscious Hip Hop wouldn't have sold records? Whole fan bases have been ousted over the special interests of the Jewish community. Lyor Cohen, a so-called Jewish…See More
