Alvidrez, Spinosa Lead Nine SPHS Football All-City Selections

San Pedro High football was set with more final postseason praise, this time from the CIF-Los Angeles City Section.

Senior RB/LB Chris Alvidrez adds to his News Pilot Prep Football MVP and Marine League Tri-Player Of The Year honors with being awarded as the CIF-LACS Division I Defensive Player Of The Year, while junior tight end Mike Spinosa was honored as Lineman Of The Year.

Alvidrez, more known for rushing for 1,196 yards and a school-record 22 touchdowns, solidified the linebacker position when he was entered into the starting rotation at the beginning of Marine League play, and in the nine games he played defense, registered 79 tackles, a sack and forced fumble, along with four pass deflections. Spinosa's honor is a remarkable achievement considering he's the only tight end to ever win that honor in school history.

Spinosa, also the Marine League Tri-Lineman Of The Year, was one of the backbones of an experienced offensive line that paved the way for San Pedro to set a school record for total rushing yards in a season with 3,299 along with 205 first downs, and an overall 4,779 yards of total offense, good for second all-time in San Pedro football history.

Also making first-team All-City on offense was senior offensive lineman Dominic O'Brien, while senior linebacker Chris Lauro and junior defensive back Antonio 'A.J.' Frazier made All-City first-team defense.

Frazier was also named the Marine League Defensive Player Of The Year.

The second-team All-City selections for San Pedro (11-2 in 2014) are senior offensive lineman Tyler Castaneda, senior running back Christian Serna, senior kicker Christian Mills and junior defensive back Christian Michaels.

Alvidrez and Spinosa join an elite fraternity of former City Section Players Of The Year in San Pedro football lore of Jim Decker (1950), Ron Barber Sr. (1962), Bryan Castaneda (1993), Melvin Yarbrough (1996), Holman Wiggins (1997), Alonzo Lefridge (2008, Defensive MVP), Kris Bass (2010, Defensive MVP), Kenny Potter (2011, Offensive Co-MVP) and Pete Palacios (2013, Defensive Co-MVP).
