San Pedro's Danielle Nunez Signs With Loyola Marymount

San Pedro High girls cross-country and track distance runner Danielle Nunez now has one more accolade to cross off her long check list of accolades... her college destination.

Nunez signed her national letter of intent to run at Loyola Marymount University on Wednesday, becoming the fourth San Pedro Prep Sports student athlete during the 2014-2015 school year, and the second from San Pedro High, following up football senior offensive lineman Dominic O'Brien signing with Southern Utah just two months ago. Nunez will join a Lions cross-country team where she will reunite with two fellow San Pedro alumni, Evelyn Gonzalez and Lorena Garcia.

"I really wanted to find a school that would be conducive for both academics and athletics, and luckily for me, I found an awesome match," Nunez said.

The list of accomplishments Nunez has at San Pedro seemingly endless.

From 2011 to now, Nunez has helped the San Pedro girls cross-country team win two CIF-Los Angeles City Section championships (2011 & 2012), and has won an individual City championship in track in 2012. She is a seven-time All-City runner (five first team, two second team), has qualified for the California State Meet six times (four in cross-country, two in track), five Marine League team titles, five Marine League individual titles, nine varsity letters, which includes playing one year of girls soccer in 2012-2013, which provided Nunez yet another Marine League title.

And of course... Nunez is just a shade under 4.0 for her GPA.

Going to a school with two former teammates in Gonzalez and Garcia along with it being her mother's alma mater was the perfect combination that hooked Nunez to being a Lion. Nunez, Gonzalez and Garcia were all on San Pedro's 2011 championship team, while Nunez and Garcia also repeated as team champions in 2012.

"My mom graduated from LMU in education so following her alma mater is really cool," Nunez said. "I'm really glad I had my former teammates supporting me the whole way and now I'm excited to spend another two years with them. They are truly my best friends and spending my freshman season with them will be a blast. I'm very excited."

Nunez was joined by family, friends and school administration for the special occasion.

Also in a small family gathering along with his fellow San Pedro baseball brethren, San Pedro High baseball senior infielder Louie Canjura signed his letter of intent to play collegiate baseball at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conneticut.
