It was the kind of performance that Analise De La Roca has been known to produce day in and day out for Port Of Los Angeles High softball in 2016.

On Friday at in-city neighbor Mary Star Of The Sea High, the Arizona State-bound junior right-hander was able to do it in front of a Homecoming crowd of sorts, as the Mary Star Elementary alumni would toss a one-hit shutout with a walk, hit batter, and 16 strikeouts to power the Polar Bears to a 14-0 intersectional victory.

The third time was the charm for POLA (19-3 overall) as they won their first game over the defending Camino Real League champion Stars (4-12) for the first time after two losses in 2011 and 2012.

De La Roca also had a wonderful day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk, a double and 3 RBIs. 

POLA spotted De La Roca six runs in the top of the first inning, as a RBI-drawn walk by sophomore left fielder Angie Vargas, an RBI-single by freshman catcher Allison Torstensen, then back-to-back RBI-drawn walks by junior third baseman Christina Hernandez and sophomore right fielder Brittany Mercado chased Mary Star sophomore pitcher Miranda Marquez off the circle and into left field, putting in sophomore Arianna Corralejo to pitch.

An out later, senior center fielder Vanessa Munoz capped off POLA's six-run barrage with a towering double to left field, driving in Torstensen and Mercado.

From there, De La Roca would seize control with 3.1 perfect innings before a walk drawn by Mary Star senior third baseman Isabella Samperio with one out in the bottom of the fourth broke up her bid for a third perfect game this season alone. At that time, the Polar Bears led 9-0 on De La Roca's RBI-single in the second, followed by two more runs plated in the fourth, one off Mercado's RBI-single.

The seventh inning saw POLA tack on five more runs, with back-to-back RBI-singles from junior second baseman Destiny Sambrano and sophomore first baseman Allie Dukes, along with a 2-run double from De La Roca, who then had her bid for a potential sixth no-hitter busted by Samperio's leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh.

Despite the setback, the Stars showed some flash defensively.

Freshman shortstop Lacey Vara made two impressive plays, none more eye-catching then her backhanded stab of a Vargas ground ball before firing to first base in time to retire Vargas. Extra credit on the play goes to junior first baseman Gigi Gentile with her great stretch and dig out of Vara's low throw to record the out.

Also Samperio in the third inning somehow trapped a hard-hit ground ball from Sambrano on her right leg with her bare right hand before calmly throwing her out.

Mary Star's only other baserunner was junior catcher Gianna Fletcher with one out in the bottom of the seventh when she was hit by a De La Roca inside pitch, but she and Samperio were both left stranded when De La Roca promptly struck out both Gentile and sophomore designated player Natasha Lomeli to end the game.

POLA, the defending Coliseum League champion, will have a critical three-game stretch starting Saturday with an El Segundo Tournament opener with another neighbor, San Pedro, and will be capped off by their first league showdown with rival Harbor Teacher Prep at the Harbor Sports Complex in Wilmington on Monday at 2:30 pm.

Next up for the Stars is a Camino Real League game against St. Monica of Santa Monica at Clover Park Monday.
