Recently, Archbishop Gomez asked me to become the assistant Vicar of Clergy for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

This position requires a six year commitment, three of which I will serve as the assistant, followed by three more years as the Vicar of Clergy.

This office cares for the well being of all the Priest in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

It is a great honor to be called to this position but it does sadden me very much that I will not be able to remain as the Pastor of Mary Star of the Sea Parish.  I have grown to love the parishioners  of Mary Star and the community of San Pedro.

These four brief years have changed my life.  I will always feel in my heart that I am a PEDRAN.

Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to serve the Church, as you will continue be in my prayers and heart.

Fr. John Provenza

Pastor,

Mary Star of the Sea Parish

Congratulations to Father John on his appointment to assistant Vicar of Clergy for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I have great admiration for Father John.  I know he leaves a great void in the San Pedro community and Mary Star.  I want to say blessing to you and may the Lord give you great joy and peace as you take on this new endeavor.

It is with a heavy heart that I congratulate Father John on this well-deserved opportunity! Father John was the driving force for the resurrection and resurgence of the Angels Gate Council Knights of Columbus here in San Pedro. We will celeberate 98 years this year, but when Father John came to Mary Star four years ago, our council was down to a few brothers getting together across one small table. Because of his activism, we are over 150 members strong and active in all three Csatholic parishes in San Pedro. The Catholic community of San Pedro will always be indebted to Father John, who will always be one of our brother Knights!
