San Pedro Once Again Sweeps Marine League XC Championships

The monopoly continues.

San Pedro High boys and girls cross-country continues to reign over the rest of the Marine League as they swept the two championships at the 2014 Marine League finals at Peck Park Thursday. Meanwhile, one reign came to an end as the Port Of Los Angeles High girls team wasn't able to qualify for next Thursday's CIF-Los Angeles City Section preliminaries at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, preventing them from capturing a third straight City Division III title.

However, the POLA boys team won the Crosstown League championship, instantly qualifying them for the prelims.

On the boys side, San Pedro took first place with a total of 21 points, Gardena placed second with 65 points, ten ahead of third place Narbonne with 75 points. Gardena's second place finish was strengthened by Cristhian Macias winning the individual Marine League title placing first in the race with a time of 16:31, but the Pirates had seven of the top ten runners finish, paced by Wyatt Kircher's second place finish of 16:41, narrowly missing the individual crown by ten seconds.

San Pedro's Kade Schmitz (17:00), Mitchell Marino (17:01) and Joey Flores (17:15) placed third, fourth and fifth respectively in a 15-second span to further bolster the defending CIF-LACS Division I champion Pirates' first place team title, a week after claiming their seventh straight Marine League season title.

Not to be left out, the San Pedro girls, a week after claiming their 14th Marine League title in 15 years, distanced themselves from the pack yet again with 18 points, with five girls finishing out of the first six, and and seven out of the first 11 finishers. Narbonne was second with 43 points, and Carson was third with 93 points. Danielle Nunez, in her final race at Peck Park, made it memorable with a first place finish at 19:56

This is Nunez's second straight year she won the individual Marine League title, and now she has her sights set on a third City Section crown.

Right behind Nunez was Dana Cameron who placed second at 20:24. Isabel Hegge came in fourth with a time of 21:14, Alex De La Pena placed fifth at 21:27, Cynthia Kelso placed sixth at 22:04, and Bronwyn Bunnell came in eighth at 22:15. Violet Tipich also finished strong at 11th place with a time of 23:18.

Even though POLA's girls team wasn't able to qualify... Natalie Rivas and Daisy Garcia both qualified individually.

All in all, it was a great day for all the San Pedro Prep Cross-Country runners.
