SPHS Football Earns Top Seed Of CIF-LACS Division I Playoffs

When San Pedro High football came away with a thrilling 17-15 victory over Carson Friday to garner a three-way share of the Marine League championship, they had no idea how big that victory would be.

As of Saturday morning, they do now.

The Pirates, by virtue of that sterling victory, were able to garner the top seed of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoffs, which begins on Friday, November 14. San Pedro (9-1) overall, will face No.16 Roosevelt of Los Angeles on Friday, 7 pm at San Pedro High.

The top billing for San Pedro was one of many shocking parts about the seeding selection itself, which was based on league strength, which the Marine came in as the toughest league in the City, strength of schedule, and overall rankings in MaxPreps.com, which the Pirates were No.5 this past week behind No.1 Narbonne, No.2 Carson, No.3 Crenshaw and No.4 Garfield.

Garfield (8-2), who defeated Roosevelt, 42-7 last night for the outright Eastern League championship, was able to leapfrog Narbonne (6-4), Carson (7-3) and defending Division I champion Crenshaw (7-3) to get the second seed of the tournament, with Narbonne and Carson, fellow Marine League tri-champions with San Pedro were seeded No.3 and No.4 respectively.

Crenshaw fell all the way down to No.5 which is probably the biggest shocker of the whole pairing, and that means assuming San Pedro can defeat Roosevelt, followed by the No.8 Arleta-No.9 Palisades winner in the quarterfinals, could potentially face either the Cougars, or a rematch with Carson in the semifinals on November 28.

It will be a tough road to get to the championship game on Saturday, December 6 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum but the race seems to be wide open, giving San Pedro as good of a chance as anybody to reach their first final since the 2008 team who ended the year in controversial fashion... as co-City Section champions with Narbonne.

Since 2009, either Narbonne or Crenshaw came out of Division I as its champion.

Here's the full bracket in order of matchups.
