The 2015 All-San Pedro News Pilot Prep Baseball Team

The 2015 San Pedro Prep Baseball season nearly ended just like 2014... as the Port Of Los Angeles High baseball team once again shook off a rough early start and won 11 games in a row, including repeating as Crosstown League champions, all the way to a second berth in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III championship game.

Unfortunately, Los Angeles CES dethroned the Polar Bears with an 8-4 victory at the MLB Urban Youth Academy field in Compton on May 29.

Even though the season took a bad turn on April 23 when San Pedro got into a bench-clearing fracas with Carson in an tense and tied Marine League game at Carson High, which ended with both teams earning a double forfeit, there was plenty of fight, the good kind of fight, in the Pirates, Polar Bears and Mary Star Of The Sea High baseball as every team posted a winning season and all reached their respective playoffs.

Behind the 2015 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Baseball Coach Of The Year Andy Fiamengo, the Stars would win their second Camino Real League title in three years, finishing 20-7 overall with an 11-1 league mark. And although they were bounced in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division V playoffs with an 8-6 loss to Lompoc, it didn't diminish the kind of season they had.

Mary Star played in perhaps the best game of the season when they won, 5-0 in 11 innings against host Bishop Montgomery of Torrance on

Senior pitcher/infielder Derrick Edwards is the 2015 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Baseball Player Of The Year after pacing the Stars in a lot of ways, going 6-1 on the mound with a 1.64 ERA, while also doing major damage at the plate in batting .457 with 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 42 runs scored. Edwards is also the Camino Real League Pitcher Of The Year, while junior infielder Joey Domicoli, who hit 5 home runs, is the Camino Real League Player Of The Year.

San Pedro was by far the most improved under second-year coach Steve Tedesco. After going 10-20 a season ago, the Pirates went 19-12 overall and placed third in the Marine League at 6-4 with a pair of walk-off victories against both Banning of Wilmington and Carson.

Junior catcher J.J. Duarte is rapidly rising among the ranks as a player to watch next year, as he's both the San Pedro News Pilot & Marine League Most Outstanding player after batting .421 with 42 RBIs. Senior shortstop Louie Canjura signed a letter of intent to play at Sacred Heart University in Conneticut, and he's the San Pedro News Pilot Infielder Of The Year after hitting .394 with 34 RBIs and 33 runs scored for the Pirates.

Canjura is one of five All-Marine League picks for the Pirates, along with senior Cheech Pacheco, and sophomores Mikey Hernandez Jr. and Isaiah Bumgarner.

POLA, who went 16-11 in 2015, was a perfect 10-0 in the Crosstown League and played in one of the best games all year when the Polar Bears defeated host Rancho Dominguez Prep, 4-2 in nine innings of a CIF-LACS Division III semifinal on May 26 that propelled them into their second straight final. Junior pitcher Fernando Rivas was unshakable in victory in tossing 17 strikeouts, and hitting the go-ahead RBI-triple in the top of the ninth inning.

All in all, it was another exciting year in the annals of San Pedro Prep Baseball.
