The 2015 All-San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Team

The 2014-2015 girls soccer campaigns for San Pedro, Port Of Los Angeles and Mary Star Of The Sea were all fruitful as for the first time in three years, they all won league championships in the same year.

For POLA and senior midfielder Tiffany Torres, it was their best team in school history, along with Torres' best year individually, as they won 20 games and played in a CIF Southern California Regional for the first time in school history while the Polar Bears finished 22-4-3 overall, a fifth straight Crosstown League championship at 11-0-1 overall, while reaching the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division IV championship for the third time in four years.

Torres took on a much more established role as one of the captains when two of their better players were lost to injuries.

In posting her most incredible season today, Torres was second on the team with 20 goals, but she also spread the ball around for a team-high 19 assists while scoring game-winning goals against St. Monica, Bright Star, Foshay Learning Center and Legacy of South Gate, while assisting on another game-winner against Community Charter.

For those amazing exploits and for the Polar Bears making the longest playoff run of any San Pedro-based high school ever, Torres is the 2015 News Pilot Girls Soccer Player Of The Year.

“Tiffany has done an excellent job in stepping up and getting things done for POLA,” senior midfielder Ariella Martinez says of Torres. “Her leadership skills are amazing and she has always put the team first.”

POLA earned their spot in the CIF Southern California Regional Division IV playoffs because of how well their season went even despite the 2-1 overtime loss to Los Angeles CES in the City Division IV final. It surprised a lot of people, especially Torres and the rest of her teammates because they felt like their season was over after the title loss.

Erick Miseroy ended up coaching that game against Malibu on March 10 for head coach Javier Torres (absent due to family situation), which brought back memories of Torres' freshman season when Miseroy, an established soccer coach and teacher, coached alongside Jennifer Kelly. Although the Polar Bears lost, 1-0 to the Sharks, they left with their heads high and eyes void of tears.

"Finding out Mizzy (Miseroy) was going to coach us for that game definitely changed things," Torres said. "It was a shock to get picked for regionals but we played better than we ever have before. We played as a team and for each other."

San Pedro got off to a much better start in Elisa De La Pena-Nagle's second season as coach, and they were able to capture their tenth straight Marine League championship, and the CIF-LACS Division I quarterfinals, going 18-7-4 overall and 9-0-1 in league. Sophomore forward Ryann Lozano, a year after rarely getting off the bench, ended up as the highest goal scorer in Division I with her 24 goals, including four hat tricks.

Freshman goalie Carlene Luna emerged game-by-game and gained notoriety by notching 17 saves in a 2-1 upset victory over Palos Verdes on December 5, 2014. Luna also made a spectacular diving save that sealed the Pirates' 1-0 victory over Narbonne on January 23, and she's the News Pilot Goalie Of The Year for her incredible first season.

Mary Star and coach Shain Rossi had to overcome a rugged start, but once they made it to a brand-new Santa Fe League, everything seemed to click, and the Stars ended up as league champions, going 12-8 overall, 7-1 in league play qualifying for the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs. Rossi is the News Pilot Coach Of The Year for the combination of his efforts gelling with the efforts of his team when it all mattered the most.

What a year it was for girls soccer in San Pedro.
