Gray whales in the North Pacific: Insight into behavior using genetics by Aimee Lang Southwest Fisheries Science Center Understanding the behavior of whales in the wild can be challenging because they have long lifespans and spend much of their time underwater. Genetic analyses, made possible by obtaining a small piece of skin from an individual whale, can provide valuable insight into the behavior of these animals that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to obtain. Dr. Lang and her colleagues at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center have analyzed genetic samples collected from gray whales across the North Pacific in order to better understand what affects the movements and distribution of these animals. This work provided new information about gray whale populations and highlighted the complexity of their behavior and migratory patterns. This information has important implications for managing gray whales in the North Pacific. |
