Navy Days returns to San Pedro today with an added feature: special tours & a science expo for kids.
Sponsored by the U.S. Navy as a way to educate local port communities about what the seagoing branch of the military does, Navy Days brings ships in for tours & informational talks.
This year’s event takes place Aug. 5-11 and will feature two visiting ships.
The Port of Los Angeles is now issuing free tickets for pubic tours of the US Navy ship or ships that will be coming for Navy Days LA. The link to the ticket site is:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/navy-days-la-2014-tickets-12324285269
You will want to reserve your spaces as soon as possible because, judging by past experience, tour spaces will fill up fast.
Meanwhile, sign-ups are available now for youth & school groups (5-18 years old) interested in participating in the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Expo that includes free ship tours, visits to high-tech military contractor company-sponsored booths & other educational activities.
The expo will be set up inside the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Terminal. Assigned tour times will be provided with more information at www.navydaysla.org/.
The Port of Los Angeles has designed an advance registration system for 2014 that eliminates traffic & wait problems.
There also may be rides available on the ships along with receptions for crew members & festivities planned such as live music at the Fanfare Fountain on the waterfront .
While in port, sailors also take part in community service projects throughout the Los Angeles area.
Those interested in making reservations for the STEM Expo for youth can email Grant Ivey, national director of the Navy League of the United States and president of Navy Days-LA, at grantivey@roadrunner.com.

We've got two Navy ships arriving this week for Navy Days LA 2014. The first will sail up the Main Channel this afternoon & the second on Wednesday (6th) afternoon. Both will pass Ports O' Call about 3 or 3:15 p.m. Sailors will be manning the rails of the ship & it would be great if we could have a crowd along the shore at Ports O' Call to welcome them to our town.
Let's hope that Pedro has become safe enough for Navy personnel to hang out and that they are not directed over the bridges again.
