Event Description

On Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., the Institute of Musical Arts welcomes back Storyteller and IMA favorite, Michael D. McCarty in his solo performance of “Reflections From Behind The Walls”.

Since 2014 Michael has been teaching inmates in nine California prisons how to find, develop and tell their stories. Come listen as he shares fascinating tales from his story creation workshops from behind the walls.

Michael D. McCarty, a "natural born storyteller", began telling stories of Black history and culture in high school in the 1960's, before becoming an activist in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements.  He is a multi-cultural storyteller of African, AfricanAmerican and International Folk tales, Historical tales, Stories of Science, Spiritual stories; and stories of the brilliant and absolutely stupid things he has done in his life. Michael’s stories inform, educate, inspire and amuse, in a style that is energetic and enthusiastic.  He has delighted audiences in the US and in more than a dozen countries with stories that are a testament to the unity and diversity of the human spirit.  He was CoDirector of the Los Angeles World Storytelling Festival (2002, 2003).  Locally, Michael is the Director of The GRIOT Workshop (Leimert Park), and has performed in area schools and has delighted audiences at the Armand Hammer Museum, California AfroAmerican Museum, Fowler Museum, U.C.L.A., Museum of Contemporary Art,  John Anson Ford Theater,  Plaza de la Raza,  The House of Blues and Knott’s Berry Farm, among others.

You can buy tickets online: http://reflectionsfrombehindthewalls.eventbrite.com, or by visiting our website:  http://www.imalosangeles.com.  You may also pay by  cash, check or credit card, at the IMA office, while supplies last. As is our custom at the Institute of Musical Arts, a catered reception will follow the performance.

Ours is a small, intimate theater, and we do expect that this concert will sell out. So please, purchase your tickets today.  Tickets for the performance are $20.00. For additional information call: (323) 300-6578.
