The second annual Tri-Carson presented by Kaiser Permanente—set for Saturday, Oct 15, on the campus California State University, Dominguez Hills—promises to keep everyone in the community on their feet. Not only will the morning include a reverse sprint distance triathlon, but also a 5K run, a 1-mile campus walk, and a 1K Kid Dash.
“Tri-Carson was organized to promote healthy living and to get people moving. This sprint distance triathlon is great for those who have never competed in a triathlon before—and last year we had a number of first-timers—but we wanted to add other events so just about anyone could take part in the morning,” said David Gamboa, director of community and government relations at CSU Dominguez Hills.
In collaboration with the City of Carson, and organizations such as Train for Autism, the Gardena-Carson YMCA and title sponsor Kaiser Permanente, Tri-Carson once again aims to raise funds in support of the CSU Dominguez Hills Scholarship Fund. Participants can also choose to raise money for Train 4 Autism, a national nonprofit founded in Carson.
The day’s feature race, the reverse sprint distance triathlon, begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 5K run, followed by a 12-mile bicycle ride—both around campus and the surrounding streets—and ending with a 200-meter swim in the campus pool. A separate 5K-only race will commence at 9:15 a.m., the 1-mile walk at 9:30 a.m., and the 1K Kid Dash at 10 a.m.
Nearly 200 individuals and organizations participated in the debut Tri-Carson last year. This year, 400 are expected to compete. A vendor expo will take place from 7-11:30 a.m. in association with the races and is open to participants and the general public.
All participants receive a T-shirt. Triathletes get a performance T-shirt, water bottle, swim cap and Kaiser towel, along with other items. Triathletes and 5K finishers also receive a medal for completion. Race packets will be available for pick up at the SouthBay Pavillion from 3-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14.
People can register up until the day of the race. Registration is $80 for the triathlon, $25 for the 5K, and $15 for the walk or the kids dash.
