A little about me
John M. Mavar, Honorary Mayor of San Pedro, 2001-2003 has been a life long resident of San Pedro and participates with local non-profit organizations as volunteer and a Board Member. He held staff positions with Assembly Member Alan Lowenthal and Mayor Jim Hahn. John’s family has been in the San Pedro community for over 100 years. Family members were fisherman, dockworkers, business owners and residential/commercial developers. John’s commitment to the community extends to co-chairing the Taste in San Pedro and as a committee member working on waterfront redevelopment plans. When the city charter was changed to allow Neighborhood Councils, John worked with other community leaders to form the Northwest Neighborhood Council. He now serves at the Vice President. John graduated from San Pedro High school and has a Business Degree from the University of Phoenix. He is currently employed by the I.L.W.U. as a longshoreman. Above, John was a Commissioner on the Neighborhood Council Review Commission. Also, pictured is the Los Angeles City Council.

San Pedro is a vibrant and diverse community because it welcomes people from far and wide, whether visiting through the Port, or coming to live and be a part of the community.

Skate or Die or Skate and Die

Posted on January 31, 2012 at 1:31am 0 Comments

As you drive through San Pedro and surrounding neighborhoods you may have encountered skateboarders racing down our street and blocking traffic. There has been an increase of this issue which has angered drivers and worried residents. Unfortunately while the dare devil skaters continue to dart in and out of traffic, an accident occurred resulting in an untimely death of a young skater. Could this accident been prevented? Now more than ever, we need to rally, as a community, to prevent future…

LA CITY Council 15 District endorsement: Mavar supports experienced "local boy make good"

Posted on December 13, 2011 at 1:30am 0 Comments

A new representative for the Los Angeles City Council 15th District will be elected on January 17, 2012. As constituents, we will expect our new Councilperson to be assessable, listen to our concerns, and take action to resolve issues. Most importantly, he’ll need to “hit the ground running”. In my opinion, Joe Buscaino is the best candidate for the job.

Joe Buscaino is committed with his heart and soul and has the vision and focus to work on the important issues facing our district.…

The Jewish Community Weaponized Hip Hop Against Black People

Is it not yet painfully obvious that the so-called European Jewish community has profited off of the destruction of African American families all across the world? Are we really going to take the stance that conscious Hip Hop wouldn't have sold records? In Memoriam: Joan Marie Wainwright, Dec.11, 1929, to July 3, 2023

Joan Marie Wainwright died peacefully on July 3, 2023, just after sunrise surrounded by her family. In the weeks prior to her death, she acknowledged that her only remaining ailment was old age, having battled chronic pain for most of her adult life. Her family and loved ones, including the attentive staff at Morningstar Boise, cared for her, hovered over her and paid their respects to a great woman. She was 93. Joan was…See More
