At the recent community dinner held by the Occupy San Pedro group a number of people got up to speak.  There were two main themes that came out of the speakers.  We are fighting for JUSTICE and we are concerned about our community, San Pedro.  There were three who stood out in my mind.

One speaker was Sherry whose home is threatened, she said she usually sits back but is tired of seeing the banks win and knows that SHE has to DO something to help get justice.  Her story is similar to many others, but with its own unique twists and turns.  She has been fighting the banks for four years in what she says is a frustrating trial of incompetence, indifference and confusion on the part of the banks.  Her situation has nothing to do with lack of income, it is simply a system gone wrong.

Then there was the young lady who ran the raffle.  She had solicited raffle prizes from a number of local businesses.  Shyly she announced what the prizes were and collected money.  A recent graduate of San Pedro High, raised in the tradition of union and community activism, she is the face of young people who are standing up for what they believe in and getting involved.

Finally, I was impressed by Rachel, whose inspiration came from her grandfather, John Gualt, a former long term teacher at San Pedro High School.  She talked about him helping start community gardens and that we each have the power to make change in our community.

So far, most Occupy San Pedro actions have targeted the banks.  Why target the banks?  They are the face of the monster in our community.  They are too big to care about San Pedro and all the other communities like San Pedro who are suffering, but we can’t let them walk all over us without speaking up.  There are real people, perhaps your neighbors, who are being hurt right now.

Bank of America has been one of the largest banks to profit off the real estate crisis, pay no taxes and receive a government bailout.  I have to admit I have a personal gripe with them.  Occupy San Pedro wants justice for those who are unfairly losing their homes and jobs due to the crisis created by the financial sector.  Small businesses have been depleted, workers cut back, equity lost, homes callously auctioned off and all the while the banks are raising interest rates and fees.

The Occupy San Pedro group held a demonstration last Saturday, December 18 in front of the Bank of America on Western Avenue, the next meeting will be a general assembly this Tuesday, December 20 of those interested in helping plan actions.  Anyone who shares these concerns is invited to participate.  You can contact the group at occupysanpedro@gmail.com .  If you wish to donate, you can make a tax deductable contribution to the Harry Bridges Institute and indicate Occupy San Pedro on the check.

I believe I read something about Bank of America rethinking their ATM bank fee policy after all the "protest" directed toward them by the "little folks" who have their "pennies and dimes" in their bank.  I say, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall".  With regard to booze dives on Western, I don't know the answer to that and perhaps Ms Bickel has an answer, but from my perspective you seem to know your booze dives pretty well. :-)

Come on Beverly, I'm dying to know. Where exactly are the booze dives on Western.

Comment by Lee Dworshak on December 19, 2011 at 5:54pm

Please check your facts Susan.  BofA has been suffering for several years due to bad decisions made by its management.  The few little folks that have pulled out their pennies and dimes in the last few months have had little if any effect on the stability of BofA.  You're dreaming again if you think a few people can move their savings and pull down a bank. Institutional investors, the likes of which you never see or read about, are the only one that can take down a bank the size of BofA.

Now you are starting to get it Lee.  We may not be in charge yet, but we will be.  B of A is already suffering from all the defections to local credit unions and banks.  This is only the beginning.

With all due respect Susan, if you don't believe that Wall Street runs this country you are living in a dream world.  Believe me when I tell you that WE are not in charge..

Booze dives on Western in San Pedro? Please tell me where. I've been having to go all the way to downtown San Pedro.

I respectfully beg to differ with Mr. Dworshak I recently read that Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Occupy LA did accomplish something by raising awareness and continuing the dialog about corporate corruption and wealth inequalities in this country.

Would Mr Dworshak prefer that people remained silent and let the status quo continue?  What planet does he live on.  Last time I checked this was the United States of America.  We all have the right to let (in this case) the banks know that they are no longer in charge.  WE ARE!!

Hi.  I work in downtown Los Angeles, and I took the time to walk around the Occupy LA encampment on three different occasions, during my lunch hour, just to check it out.  On all three occasions, which were weeks apart, the place was scrupulously clean and there was no 'stink' or any other sign of a sanitation problem.  From the news reports about the police eviction, I conclude that the haz-mat suits, bomb squad, etc. were drama for the sake of photographers.  There were a number of reports at the time, from the Health Department and City Hall, that the Health Department was visiting the site daily and found no citable violations.  Here is a link I just found to one such report: http://www.thecitymaven.com/2011/12/02/mayor-health-department-no-h...    As for Mr. Dworshak's concern about Western Avenue becoming contaminated by the presence of protestors, that is hilarious.  Western Avenue?  Come on.  Perhaps a more useful outlet for Mr. Dworshak's energy would be a campaign to get rid of the booze dives, derelict auto-repair shops, and other eyesores that are the main characteristic of Western Avenue.  The presence of protestors could only improve the look and atmosphere of the place.

Thanks.. and yes I see and read about the housing crisis every day. For the record however, I have not made a dime on subprime loans or on anyone's misfortunes. I am a retired Realtor and was never in the lending business. Realtors simply work as agents for buyers and sellers and as such we are not even a party to the buy/sell transactions we facilitate.

Are you not allied with the Occupy Wall Street and Occupy LA movements? They sure stunk up their respective encampments.  I'm just worried that San Pedro will be next.

You are entitled to your opinion Mr. Dworshark.  I note that you are involved in the real estate business so I imagine you have seen the impact of the housing crisis first hand.  It makes me wonder why you are so opposed to people protesting what is happening.  Could it be that you were one of those who profited off predatory loans and are profiting off others misfortunes?  Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against realtors and the buying and selling of property---quite the contrary. I know that most realtors are simply small business people who have been hit by the crisis like the rest of us.

There is no one "stinking up" San Pedro except those who don't believe in JUSTICE.
