Shell Establishes Scholarship at CSU Dominguez Hills

California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García has announced the creation of the Shell Oil Scholarship thanks to a recent donation from Shell Pipeline Company LP.

The Shell Oil Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student from Carson or other South Bay cities who is in good academic standing and is majoring in one of the university’s STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) degree programs.

García made the announcement at a recent university reception, at which Shell Pipeline area manager Don Herman presented the university with a $26,500 check, from which $5,000 has been designated for the scholarship.

“We are grateful for the true partnership we have with Shell,” García said. “Over the years, Shell has worked hand-in-hand with us to expand opportunities for our students, and this newest donation continues that commitment.”

The donation also includes $15,000 in support of the Presidential Scholars program, the university’s most prestigious academic scholarship. President scholars are among the university’s brightest students and receive full tuition and other benefits.

The remainder of the donation will go toward a number of programs on campus during the 2011-2012 year, including the annual College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished Lecture Series that provides students with the opportunity to hear from experts in the sciences; the Faculty Awards Program that honors noteworthy faculty accomplishments in the areas of teaching, service and research; CSU Dominguez Hills Student Research Day, designed to give graduate and undergraduate students an opportunity to present the results of their collaborative research and creative activities conducted with faculty; and the School of Education Credential Reception to honor newly credentialed teachers.

“As one of the world’s most innovative energy companies, Shell is proud to support the educational efforts at CSU Dominguez Hills,” Herman said. “We believe that education is a critical component of innovation, and we are excited to help with the development of future innovators.”
