When Billy Lopez made the San Pedro High boys soccer team's fifth and final penalty kick in a shootout, the Pirates would capture the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 4 championship with a hard fought victory over University of Los Angeles on March 3, 2018 at Los Angeles Valley College. The Pirates and Wildcats battled to a 1-1 draw, with neither team scoring for 80 minutes of regulation and trading goals in the first overtime. Juan Retana made the game's first goal three minutes into the first overtime for San Pedro to score first, before University scored three minutes later to tie the game at 1 apiece. This is San Pedro's first CIF boys soccer championship since 1989.
