Analise De La Roca Hurls 20 K Perfection In Finale For POLA

LOS ANGELES - Starting off a season with a no-hitter is impressive enough, but ending that same season with a perfect game is almost unimaginable.

Port Of Los Angeles High softball junior pitcher Analise De La Roca can say she has accomplished both feats.

Closing out the 2016 regular season in grand fashion, De La Roca faced 21 batters against host Crenshaw of Los Angeles, and an incredible 20 of them struck out, as the Polar Bears won, 8-0 over the Cougars to cap off a perfect run through the Coliseum League, and De La Roca's third perfect game of the year.

This latest performance from the Arizona State verbal commit looked eerily similar and just as dominant as her season-opening no-hitter (De La Roca's first of five no-no's this season) against Westlake of Westlake Village in a 4-0 victory for POLA (25-4 overall, 12-0 league) on February 27, which she struck out 12 in a Redondo Tournament game, also the Polar Bears' season opener.

With this awesome display of dominance, De La Roca now has 381 strikeouts this season, which is only one behind former El Camino Real pitching stud Krista Cobb for the CIF-Los Angeles City Section single-season strikeout record. Cobb struck out a whopping 382 hitters in 2008, which means De La Roca can break the record in the first round of the CIF-LACS playoffs, and if the Polar Bears have a deep run, she can easily reach the 400 mark.

In this game against Crenshaw (7-6, 6-6), De La Roca made it look almost effortlessly.

De La Roca would strike out the side in the bottom of the first inning, force a ground ball out hit right back to her to start the second, and then sat down the next 17 batters in a row. In all, De La Roca tossed 89 pitches, 60 of which were strikes called/swung at and missed, 19 called for a ball, the groundout in the second inning, and the other nine were made contact on but were fouled off.

Also, De La Roca added an RBI-single to center for the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, her only hit in four at-bats for POLA, while her battery mate, freshman catcher Allison Torstensen, went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and 2 RBIs.

The offense of POLA was methodical, pounding out 11 hits. Sophomore third baseman Angie Vargas went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman outfielder Celine Salcido went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and sophomore second baseman Sienna Valencia hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, while driving in a second run off a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Freshman shortstop Yolanda Racaza added an RBI-single in the seventh.

So for the regular season, De La Roca finishes with a miniscule 0.36 ERA, allowing only 14 runs (9 earned), 24 walks and 8 hit batters with 18 shutouts in 24 complete games on 176 innings pitched in 2,440 total pitches thrown.
