It was finally time for San Pedro High football to get a little break for a change after engaging in two hard-fought battles in the Marine League against Narbonne of Harbor City and Banning of Wilmington.
An eligibility and injury-depleted Washington of Los Angeles team proved to be no match for the host Pirates, who rolled to a 52-0 victory to improve to 7-1 overall, 1-1 in league. Senior running back Chris Alvidrez would be too tough for the visiting Generals, as he scored four touchdowns on the night.
Alvidrez, the reigning Marine League Co-Offensive MVP of a season ago, would score twice in the first quarter off 10-yard touchdown run, and a 21-yard touchdown off a screen pass from junior quarterback Jacob Miller, who completed 8-of-17 passes for 132 yards without an interception.
Midway through the second quarter, Alvidrez would burst through for a seven-yard touchdown run and a 28-0 lead, which would extend to 31-0 at halftime when senior kicker Christian Mills booted a 24-yard field goal in as time expired in the second quarter. Finally, Alvidrez's 14-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter on his final carry of the game capped off his stellar night. Fittingly enough, that touchdown run was Alvidrez's 14th of the 2014 season.
Senior running back Christian Serna, who ran for a 26-yard touchdown run to cap off San Pedro's game-opening three-play, 62-yard drive that only took 42 seconds, and sophomore reserve quarterback Nick Zabatta, also had strong rushing efforts for the Pirates.
The final two scores of the night for San Pedro came late in the third quarter on junior defensive end Vincent Wood pouncing on a fumble in the end zone by Washington quarterback Malik Ridgell, who bobbled the snap, and when Zabatta burst through the middle for a 21-yard touchdown on the final play of the game as the entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Junior defensive back Christian Michaels broke up three passes on defense, while Wood, junior defensive end Theo Niles and and senior linebacker Chris Lauro each had tackles for loss as the Generals (2-6, 0-3), who only crossed San Pedro territory once, turning the ball over on downs from San Pedro's 9-yard line in the second quarter.
San Pedro will next travel to face host Gardena on Thursday at 7 pm.
