Engel, Villela & Mancilla Lead All-City Girls Soccer Selections

As San Pedro and Port Of Los Angeles High girls soccer both went on their respective streaks and long playoff runs, the CIF-Los Angeles City Section rewarded both with five combined All-City selections.

The Pirates (20-3-2) posted arguably their best season to date with a record 18-game winning streak which ended in the Division 1 semifinals where it lost a 2-0 duel to eventual champion Taft of Woodland Hills, but junior midfielders Sydney Engel and Maddie Villela were both chosen by respective City coaches to be All-City overall and Division 1 selections

Engel scored 18 goals which was second to San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Co-MVP and fellow junior Ryann Lozano's 28, while Villela was a true enforcer and co-team captain that also made the Pirates feared, especially when they won their 11th straight Marine League title only conceding one goal in their ten league victories.

Meanwhile, the Polar Bears (22-5-4) reached their second straight Division 4 championship game before falling to Northridge Academy in a penalty kick shootout after a scoreless duel for 110 minutes, still that didn't diminish the accomplishment of the team, nor its star sophomore forward Briana Mancilla, the San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Co-MVP who was an All-City Division 4 and overall first team selection.

Mancilla was third in the entire City Section with 30 goals, and second in the City with 26 assists, and is one of thre All-City Division 4 selections for POLA. Joining Mancilla is junior forward Anna Vidovich, who posted a strong season of nine goals despite missing half the season with a bruised thigh.

Also garnering her second All-City Division 4 selection is senior goalie Emily Haugen, who combined with fellow senior Daisy Garcia to form an intimidating goalkeeping tag team.

Both San Pedro and POLA will be returning a nucleus of talent so this may be a sign of things to come for the 2016-2017 season.
