Not noted for power like their two fellow Marine League champions this season, the San Pedro High softball team has their own power surge when needed with three talented young stars.
Junior INF/P/OF Jocelyn Kondash, sophomore outfielder Cayla Ezelle, and sophomore INF/OF Taylor Richter are a trio of big reasons why the Pirates are currently on a roll heading into Tuesday's CIF-Los Angeles City Section semifinal game at rival Carson, one of the two Marine League co-champions (Banning of Wilmington being the other) who have already defeated San Pedro twice this season.
Ezelle, Kondash and Richter have combined to hit eight of San Pedro's 11 home runs this season.
Kondash already has a majestic blast to her resume, when she crushed a grand slam home run over a 30-foot tall fence at El Segundo's Recreation Park during a 9-4 victory over Santa Monica in the fifth place game of the El Segundo Tournament. The three-year veteran (first year on varsity) is hitting .296 with two homers and 25 RBIs for San Pedro (19-13 overall).
Also teaming with fellow junior Jaclyn Rivera in the circle, Kondash has a 7-5 record with 3.60 ERA, striking out 43 batters in 61 innings pitched.
Richter is a two-year veteran who has started at third base and left field depending on who was the starting pitcher for the Pirates, and she's been the most consistent hitter on the team with a .464 batting average, 4 home runs and 22 RBIs, also smacking five doubles and 3 triples for a .738 slugging percentage. Richter leads the team with 39 total hits overall and also earned the save in a 10-7 victory over Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates.
Not to be outdone is Ezelle, who is batting .353 with two homers and 10 RBIs. Ezelle hit a towering home run that traveled so far in a victory over Ramona Convent of Alhambra in the Whittier Tournament, that she still crossed the plate at Cantwell Sacred Heart High of Montebello despite tripping and falling rounding first base. Ezelle, Kondash and Richter all homered in a ten-run second inning, and Richter's blast was a grand slam.
Ezelle and Kondash were members of last year's JV team that won the City Section championship.
Defensively, Ezelle made a splendid over-the-shoulder catch from left field at Peninsula, and doubled up a runner with a strong throw from right field after catching a fly ball against Carson earlier this month for a double play. Richter made a nice backhand stab of a hard hit ground ball against Pioneer in the Artesia Tournament before throwing out a runner.
With a win over Carson on Tuesday, the Pirates could have a chance to win a 17th City Section title on Saturday afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Look for Ezelle, Kondash and Richter to all be key reasons why should the Pirates take down the Colts.
