Fromhold Field was abuzz in San Pedro as the Mary Star High baseball team was able to celebrate something that hasn't occurred since 2005...
A Camino Real League championship, and an undisputed one at that.
Once the final out was recorded, the Stars were able to revel in their greatest joy for a long time, as they defeated visiting St. Bernard of Playa Del Rey, 9-7 to clinch the Camino Real League title. Gilbert Marquez hit a three-run home run and had five RBIs for the Stars (17-6 overall), who went through league play without a loss, going 10-0 in league competition.
Joe Alves went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, and Derrick Edwards went 3-for-4 for Mary Star, who overcame a three home run game from St. Bernard's Greg Carter, who drove in five of the Vikings' seven runs.
Mary Star also defeated St. Bernard (8-18, 7-3) earlier in the week.
