Mary Star High Football 2014 Gets Six All-SFL Selections

Mary Star High football may have had its fair share of growing pains for the 2014 season, but the Stars had so many positives to build on from a 2-8 campaign.

The Stars graduate only six from this year's team, so that means everyone else will return for the 2015 season, including five of the six players that were honored Thursday as members of the All-Santa Fe League team. Mary Star went 1-3 in league play, but finished the season strong with two wins in their final three games after starting the season 0-7.

A trio of juniors in RB/LB Vinny Lauro, RB/LB/K/P Jarod Alves and OL/DL Anthony Garcia all made first team All-Santa Fe League, while two more juniors in WR/DB Jason Smith and OL/DL Kevin Lopez made second team all-league along with senior OL/LB Arnold Madrigal.

Lauro did it all for the Stars, rushing for 1,153 yards and ten touchdowns on 195 carries, while catching 19 passes for 268 yards and four more touchdowns. In a 69-20 victory over Bosco Tech of Rosemead on October 31, Lauro accounted for five touchdowns on three runs, a reception, and even a pass, when he threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Ubert Arana off a trick play.

Alves was another who did a lot for Mary Star, rushing for 459 yards and eight touchdowns on 55 carries, while catching 16 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Alves also handled the kicking duties, making 21-of-28 PAT kicks, and converting on one field goal in two attempts, also averaging 33.5 yards a punt and kicking six touchbacks.

Garcia led Mary Star in pancake blocks on offense, while also forcing five fumbles, recovering three, even returning one for a touchdown.

Lopez and Madrigal were also key contributors to a young offensive line, and doubled up on defense as two of Mary Star's top tacklers. Smith caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, intercepting two passes on defense and even returning a kickoff for a touchdown against St. Monica of Santa Monica on October 11.
