TORRANCE - The Del Rey League opener for Mary Star High football was against their most fiercest rival in host Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, a team the Stars wanted to beat more than anyone else in league competition.
In a game that was postponed to a Saturday afternoon due to power outage in certain areas of Torrance and Redondo Beach, Mary Star was undone by five turnovers, and the big-play capability of the Knights, leading to a 21-7 defeat that seemed like the Stars were capable of winning even in spite of their many mistakes. Louie Soto was the catalyst for Bishop Montgomery (3-1, 1-0), completing 15-of-19 passes for 188 yards and two TDs.
Mary Star (1-3, 0-1) was able to make the Knights work the majority of the contest, running for over 200 yards. Junior quarterback Derrick Edwards scored the Stars' only touchdown on a five-yard run midway through the third quarter, and senior running back Shane Nunez ran for 123 yards on 23 carries.
The Stars, who only punted once, will resume Del Rey League play on Friday against Verbum Dei of Los Angeles at Daniels Field.
