The 2015 San Pedro Prep Girls Volleyball season has come to a conclusion, and the San Pedro, Mary Star and Port Of Los Angeles High teams passed the rigors of league competition and tournaments to all once again make their respective CIF playoffs.
Mary Star (16-11 overall) is the only one of the three to garner a first round home match, as the back-to-back Santa Fe League co-champion Stars will host Santa Paula on Tuesday, 6 pm in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs. The Stars have done a marvelous job under second-year coach Tyler Jaynes and have slowly, but surely, become the darling program of the school.
Without a senior on the roster, Mary Star will likely be back again next season as they boast a junior-laden team spearheaded by the likes of juniors Ally Spillane, Angela Pisano, Lexi Andrie, Ticela Molio’o, Kaitlyn Martinez, Gianna Fletcher and budding freshman libero Jena Denardo.
Meanwhile in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section, San Pedro once again has improved their stock in the Marine League finishing in a second-place tie with Narbonne of Harbor City. The Pirates (13-10) drew the ninth seed of the CIF-LACS Division I playoffs and will travel to face eighth-seeded Hamilton of Los Angeles on Monday at 7 pm.
Second-year coach Chris Ceballos will lead the Pirates into battle and key players are junior Katie Bentovoja, freshman Sara Peterson, sophomores Alison Lyons and Amya Crouch, and the senior duo of Brianna Corallo and Isabella Mejia. However, sophomore Selene Ramirez has come on strong in recent matches for San Pedro.
Also, POLA (9-16 overall) may not be four-time Crosstown League champions after surrendering their crown to new champion Foshay Learning Center, but the Polar Bears and second-year coach Rowel Ramirez still made it to the CIF-LACS Division IV playoffs. No.13 POLA will also get a rematch with fourth-seeded Rancho Dominguez of Carson/Long Beach on Monday at 4 pm.
The Polar Bears lost in three sets to Rancho Dominguez on September 2 at Peck Park, but senior libero Abrie Trivison, freshman Julia Gersch, sophomores Areelle Navarro and Sachi Verner, and senior setter Jaida Nabayan will give it their all.
Best wishes to all three schools as they continue their journey in the CIF playoffs.
