It's not often where Mary Star High can celebrate a moment such as a buzzer-beating shot ever since their current high school campus was built and dedicated in 2007, but they were able to do that in this boys basketball nonleague game against visiting Sage Hill of Newport Beach.
It was a back-and-forth game all the way, and it even went into two overtimes, with the score tied at 69-69 with just 32 seconds to play in the second overtime.
Freshman guard Nathan Linayou would take a pass from senior forward Nick Green and bury a three-pointer from the right wing with 2.3 seconds left but Mary Star already knew the game was theirs when it happened, as time quickly expired all the Stars could do was mob Linayou, their new unsung hero of their 72-69 victory over Sage Hill that ended their three-game losing streak, ending the Lightning's three-game winning streak in the process.
Linayou finished with 10 points on the night, but his moment in time would never have occurred if it weren't for another freshman guard in Nick Billings, who hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation that tied the score at 55-55.
Green led all scores with 26 points, Billings scored eight points, and senior guard Elijah Davis added 22 points for Mary Star (3-3), who also got a solid 15-rebound effort from sophomore center Justin Rodriguez. The Stars will next continue play on Thursday at the San Pedro Pirate Shootout Tournament at San Pedro High.
