Going up to San Bernadino for their 2013 opener gave Mary Star High football a chance to show host Aquinas they are not the same team that they destroyed in 2012.
True, not many teams would accept moral victories, but the Stars earned a huge moral victory despite losing to Aquinas, 15-13. Mary Star (0-1) would take a 7-0 halftime lead, fall behind early, then take a 13-8 third quarter advantage when senior running back Shane Nunez busted loose for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play they ran after falling behind.
Aquinas scored midway through the fourth quarter and held on for the win... a much different atmosphere from the 2012 opener between these two at Daniels Field, where Aquinas rolled to a 46-0 victory.
Mary Star will face St. Monica of Santa Monica at Palisades High next Saturday.
