Once Mary Star High boys basketball senior forward Neil Green started off hot, everything else fell into place for rest of the youthful Stars.
In the 2014-2015 season opening crosstown showdown with visiting Port Of Los Angeles, Green made his first five shots in the first quarter en route to scoring a game-high 25 points in powering Mary Star to a 65-50 victory over the Polar Bears. Green outdueled POLA senior guard Brandon Ramirez, who scored 23.
Green hit his first three shots, all three-pointers, while sophomore guard Nathan Linayao also drilled a three-pointer to spark Mary Star to a 29-13 lead in the first quarter. Green outscored POLA on his own in the first eight minutes with 16 first quarter points. The Stars would take a 43-22 lead at halftime and cruised from there despite the Polar Bears' scrappiness.
The Stars (1-0) led wire-to-wire and led by as much as 25 points, and POLA couldn't get any closer than 29-20 early in the second quarter.
Linayao scored 10 points, and sophomore point guard Nick Billings added 9 points for Mary Star, who got 11 rebounds from junior center Justin Rodriguez. Senior forward Kevin Mendoza had 12 points and 7 rebounds for POLA (0-1), who played its first game under new head coach Matthew Willins.
