Finally, it was a chance for Mary Star High football to get off the blocks of what has been an otherwise dismal season.
In comes Bosco Tech of Rosemead for this Santa Fe League game at Daniels Field, and all of a sudden, the Notre Dame-style helmets get a little extra 'Golden Dome' shine on them which more than made up for the gloomy cloudy skies on this spooky Halloween night.
Starting off their season losing its first seven games, now the Stars have started a brand-new streak as they exploded in one of the most frightening offensive outputs ever to the tune of a 69-20 victory over the Tigers for their first league victory of the season on Friday, and their second consecutive victory.
Yes, the insanely high scoring finish was quite the unexpected twist and turn that Mary Star (2-7 overall, 1-2 league) has not had in quite a long time, but it certainly was something truly admired.
Junior RB/DB Vinny Lauro played a big hand in it all, accounting for five touchdowns on the night.
Mary Star didn't take long as Lauro's 9-yard touchdown run put them up 7-0 with 9:43 left in the first quarter, and just 15 seconds later, junior defensive end Anthony Garcia forced a fumble, suddenly picked it up and rumbled 32 yards for a touchdown on the Tigers' first offensive play they ran, and that got the Star fans, and most notably, his teammates on the sidelines and on the field, lit up with uncontainable excitement.
Bosco Tech (0-9, 0-3) settled down and used some clock before scoring on an 8-yard bootleg run by sophomore quarterback Brandon Burchfield, while a two-point conversion run by junior RB/DB Martin Montellano made the score 14-8 in Mary Star's favor with 2:50 left in the first quarter.
Lauro would quickly answer back with a 55-yard touchdown run where he spun away from two tacklers, and suddenly the Stars were right back up, 21-8 a minute later, then Montellano's three-yard touchdown run cut the lead down again to 21-14 four seconds into the second quarter.
From there, the Stars went medieval on Bosco Tech with 28 points in the second quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Robert Enciso let the Bosco Tech blitz come to him on a fourth-and-long play, then dumped off a screen pass to Lauro who cut up the right corner untouched for a 26-yard touchdown. And then comes the trick... and a treat.
Enciso handed the ball off to Lauro out of the shotgun, and then Lauro suddenly stopped and fired a bomb to senior wide receiver Ubert Arena for a 28-yard touchdown with 5:42 remaining. The Stars were far from done, as Lauro's 25-yard touchdown run was then followed by a three-yard touchdown run by junior RB/LB Jarod Alves, and suddenly the Stars were up 49-14, and the score remained that way at halftime.
Alves would run for two more touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of 40 and 49 yards, then sophomore fullback Alex Stavros would finish off the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run early during a quick fourth quarter due to the running clock put into play. Alves made 9 out of his ten point-after-touchdown kicks.
Defensively, despite giving up three touchdowns, the Stars registered five forced turnovers. Garcia recovered two fumbles on the night, while sophomore linebacker Jamie Casiano and junior Jonathan Navarro also recovered a fumble. junior WR/DB Jason Smith's interception in the third quarter set up Alves' 40-yard touchdown with 7:59 to play in the third quarter.
Only one Mary Star offensive possession ended in a turnover, and they didn't attempt a punt.
It was truly a night to remember for the Stars, who face a far more daunting challenge for their 2014 season finale next Friday against Santa Fe League-leading St. Anthony of Long Beach at Daniels Field.
