It was tough, but Port Of Los Angeles High softball maintained their dominance in league competition.
Harbor Teacher Prep of Wilmington, the Polar Bears' chief rival, came hard on back-to-back Monday battles but somehow POLA managed to thwart the Monarchs when it was all said and done. By virtue of a 2-0 victory at Leland Park in San Pedro Monday, POLA would repeat as Coliseum League champions and capture their sixth straight outright league crown.
Junior pitcher Analise De La Roca would dominate in the circle once again, carrying a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning and finish with a one-hit shutout, with a walk, a hit batter and 11 strikeouts for POLA (24-2 overall, 11-0 league), also bringing in the game's first run with her own groundout in the bottom of the third inning.
The game sure looked like it would be a classic struggle from the outset.
De La Roca and Harbor Teacher Prep junior pitcher Carmen Angulo would put up zeroes in the first 2.5 innings until POLA junior second baseman Destiny Sambrano would strike with a leadoff double to right-center field. Sophomore left fielder Brittany Mercado moved Sambrano over to third with a bunt, then De La Roca's grounder to second would bring her in for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, freshman catcher Allison Torstensen got things going again for POLA with a leadoff single to center field. Freshman designated player Melanie Arent would move over sophomore courtesy runner Bianca Velasquez to second with a bunt, then senior center fielder Vanessa Munoz flied out to center.
That would bring up POLA sophomore right fielder Sienna Valencia.
With the count 2-and-1, Valencia would hit an Angulo changeup to center field for an RBI-single, plating Velasquez and give POLA a 2-0 edge which seemed secure with De La Roca wheeling and dealing, and the infield of Sambrano, junior third baseman Christina Hernandez, freshman shortstop Yolanda Racaza and sophomore first baseman Angie Vargas all making plays to back her up.
A towering double to center field by Harbor Teacher Prep junior catcher Gabrielle Fua on De La Roca's first pitch in the top of the seventh created yet another scare, and also give the Monarchs (14-15, 9-2) a well-needed lift, but Fua was only able to make it to third base on Angulo's groundout to Racaza before De La Roca struck out junior second baseman Rhyen Aguilar and junior center fielder Angelica Estrada looking to end it.
Angulo was game for Harbor Teacher Prep as she hurled a five-hitter with five strikeouts on four walks to keep the Monarchs in it all day long.
POLA also survived the first meeting on April 25 at Harbor Sports Complex in Wilmington with a 4-3 win over the Monarchs, which made it the toughest road to a league championship ever for the Polar Bears.
Still undaunted and undefeated in seven years of league play, POLA has now won 66 consecutive league contests with one final game to go on Wednesday at Crenshaw of Los Angeles with the CIF-Los Angeles City Section playoff pairings scheduled to be announced on Saturday.
