The Port Of Los Angeles High baseball team got a bonus first round victory in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III playoffs last Friday when No.16 Camino Nuevo wasn't available and ended up not showing to Henderson Field in San Pedro.
Then seemed like they got another bonus facing Crosstown League rival Harbor Teacher Prep of Wilmington, a team the Polar Bears had already beaten twice.
Not taking that situation for granted, top-seeded POLA would explode with a six-run fourth inning that got started with a bases-clearing double from Joey Santa Maria and would eventually steamroll to a 13-3, six-inning victory over the visiting No.9 Monarchs, putting the Polar Bears into the semifinal round for the second consecutive season.
Joseph Mancha went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Anthony Carson went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and John Contreras also added an RBI for POLA (17-4 overall), who will face off against No.5 LACES, a 6-5 winner over fourth-seeded Animo Venice Charter, on Friday, 3pm at Los Angeles Harbor College.
The Polar Bears have now won 17 games out of their last 18 after starting the season 0-3, ending a four-game winning streak for Harbor Teacher Prep (8-7) in the process.
