The Port Of Los Angeles High girls soccer team began yet another quest for a CIF-Los Angeles City Section Small Schools Division title, and although Collin's Family (College Ready Academy) of Huntington Park is nowhere in the same breath as two-time defending champion LACES, the Polar Bears still took the game seriously.
It was tied 1-1 at halftime, but two goals by freshman forward Anna Vidovich in the second half provided the host Polar Bears with a 4-1 victory at Daniels Field in their season opener Wednesday.
Vidovich was assisted on both of her goals by junior midfielder Isabela Van Antwerp, who also scored twice, including the season's first goal in the 11th minute for a 1-0 POLA lead. Collin's Family (1-1 overall), who was coming off a 3-2 victory over Westchester earlier in the week, tied the score before halftime in the 38th minute before the Polar Bears pulled away.
Junior midfielder Tiffany Torres also added an assist, while senior Nicole Sierra, sophomore Daisy Garcia and freshman Emily Haugen all saw time at goalie for POLA, combining for three saves.
POLA will take on California Academy of Math and Sciences (CAMS) of Carson on Friday in another nonleague game.
