A crushing loss to rival Rancho Dominguez Prep of Long Beach knocked the Port Of Los Angeles High girls volleyball team down a notch, but it didn't knock them out of their aspirations completely.
Visiting Bright Star of Los Angeles provided little resistance to the resolve of the Polar Bears, as they rolled to a 25-11, 25-15, 25-11 victory that earned POLA a share of their second consecutive Crosstown League championship with idle Rancho Dominguez Prep, whom POLA also defeated in five sets back on October 9.
The Polar Bears (16-14-1 overall, 11-1 league) should get a decent seed in the upcoming CIF-Los Angeles City Section Small Schools Division playoffs.
Serving played a big part in the Polar Bears' victory.
Junior setter Maria Mohan served up 7 aces, sophomore middle hitter Makayla Warth and senior outside hitter Kelsea Short each had 6 aces, junior outside hitter Tiffany Torres added 4 aces, while senior RS Layanna Taaufau and senior outside hitter Angela Wade had 3 aces each for the Polar Bears. Wade had 5 kills, Short and junior opposite hitter Isabela Van Antwerp each had 3 kills on the day, and Torres had two kills as well.
POLA should get a huge boost come playoff time as senior middle blocker Allison Bayer should return from an injured thumb that has sidelined her for three weeks.
