POLAHS Softball Closes TNT Tournament Out In Style

TORRANCE - After four grueling games in the Torrance National Tournament, the Port Of Los Angeles High softball team gained a split.

It was the final day of the tournament, and the Polar Bears got a chance to finish with a third straight victory in a tournament filled with perennial powers and local top teams as they battled against Environmental Charter of Lawndale at Wilson Park in Torrance.

A slow start didn't faze POLA, as they would clobber the White Tigers, 16-1 in four innings.

Notable regulars got a chance to rest, giving freshman pitcher Vanessa Munoz the opportunity for her first career start, and she didn't disappoint.

Munoz would strike the side out to begin the game, and finish with six strikeouts, walking two. She was aided by a stellar defensive play from senior catcher Brianna Grayson, as she picked off a runner at first base in the top of the second inning. Grayson also caught another runner stealing second base in the third inning.

Offensively, there were plenty of stars on this day who were the catalysts to the Polar Bears' 13-hit parade.

Junior first baseman Allison Bayer went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and 5 RBIs, while sophomore second baseman Rosemary Garcia would also go 3-fof-3 with a triple, 2 RBIs and three runs scored to power POLA (6-5 overall). Sophomore center fielder Adriana Vargas went 2-for-2 with a two-RBI triple during the Polar Bears' 10-run third inning. Sophomore third baseman Savanna Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs for POLA.

This victory capped off a remarkable journey in the TNT Tournament that started off with tough losses to King of Riverside and Foothill of Nevada, then stormed through with three straight victories, including key wins over Bishop Gorman of Nevada and Verrado of Arizona.

POLA will next play in the 2013 Spring Jamboree Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, which begins on Wednesday.
