When you dominate a division the way the Port Of Los Angeles High softball team did to all who opposed them in CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 3, it seemed fitting that the Polar Bears would also rule in the postseason awards for that division.
Out of the 16-player roster, the Polar Bears (28-8 overall) would get not one, not two, but a dozen players all selected to the All-City Division 3 team. That is one mind-boggling and exceptional accomplishment.
Junior first baseman Allison Bayer, who broke four school hitting records, was chosen as the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 3 Player Of The Year, while sophomore pitcher Nicolle Miranda was unanimously chosen as the division's Pitcher Of The Year for the second consecutive season.
Bayer hit .444 for POLA, while setting the school single-season records with home runs (11), RBIs (49), runs scored (45) and doubles (14). Miranda went 21-8 in the circle with a 1.88 ERA, 205 strikeouts and 39 walks in 156 2/3 innings pitched while also hitting .442 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs. Miranda pitched 19 complete games and posted five shutouts for the Polar Bears, who beat Northridge Academy for their third straight CIF-LACS Division 3 title.
Making first team All-City Division 3 was junior shortstop Kelsea Short, sophomore third baseman Savana Ramirez and sophomore second baseman Rosemary Garcia, who's sister Tori Garcia was All-City Division 1 last season in her final year at San Pedro High (2012).
Short missed eight games with a bruised foot but still hit .422 with 6 homers and 32 RBIs. Garcia, a San Pedro transfer, hit .404 with 6 HRs and 36 RBIs, while Ramirez, a transfer from West Torrance, hit .443 with 2 homers and 36 RBIs, breaking the school record with a team-high 47 hits, three more than Bayer's 44 hits. Short and Garcia (12 doubles) tied for the team lead along with senior catcher Brianna Grayson, with 4 triples.
Grayson was one of four Polar Bears who made second team All-City Division 3 along with junior center fielder Sarah Maldonado and sophomore outfielders Tiffany Torres and Briana Valencia, who all earned their second All-City selections. It's the third All-City selections for both Grayson and Short.
As if that wasn't enough, three more Polar Bears made honorable mention in sophomore utility player Adriana Vargas and freshmen Vanessa Munoz, the No.2 pitcher behind Miranda, and outfielder Emily Ibarra, who in most games was the designated player in the hitting lineup.
POLA as a team alone, had a .393 batting average with 43 home runs and 330 RBIs with 428 runs scored on 392 hits in 36 games with a .479 on-base percentage and a .633 slugging percentage.
In Division 1, San Pedro softball had three All-City selections as Angelina Boskovich, Taylor Richter and Jocelyn Kondash were all selected to the All-City Division 1 team for the Pirates, who struggled during one of their most challenging regular seasons to date yet still ended their season with their customary semifinals berth.
