Sorry we didn't see this earlier - but you can call 213-485-2600 to find out. That is the dispatch office of the helicopter unit - very nice and don't mind telling you why they're in the air. Thanks LAist!

The LAPD has the largest municipal airborne law enforcement operation in the world with two choppers in the air at all times. There was a series sponsored by KCET, Spot.us and the Cal Endowment that ran on Leimert Park Beat on the topic - one interesting note is that the helicopters go on routine calls such as vandalism as well as more serious calls. http://www.leimertparkbeat.com/profiles/blogs/helicopter-hella-loud
