San Pedro Prep Football in 2015 saw both San Pedro & Mary Star High reach postseason football for the first time since 2012, and both were well represented on their respective year-end all-league selections with two players in particular getting high honors.
San Pedro senior WR/DB Antonio ‘A.J.’ Frazier Jr. was named the Co-Defensive Player Of The Year in the Marine League for the second straight season after being the sole winner a season ago.
Frazier Jr. was all over the gridiron for the Pirates (7-5 overall in 2015), gaining 1,049 all-purpose yards, registering 99 tackles and scoring touchdowns in four different ways (2 rushing, 2 punt returns, receiving, interception return). Frazier Jr. also broke up six passes and delivering hard hit after hard hit, seemingly being in every big play in every conceivable way.
Making first team All-Marine League on offense is sophomore running back Kai Kaneshiro (894 rushing yards, 13 TDs, 143 carries), senior offensive lineman Isaac Noriega, and the junior wide receiver tandem of Raymond Geha (18 catches, 428 yards, 7 TDs) and Mikey Hernandez Jr. Senior defensive lineman Mike Spinosa headlines the first team All-Marine League defensive picks for San Pedro, with a team-high 100 tackles and four sacks. Also making first team defense is junior linebacker Nick Zabatta, senior linebacker Noe Lopez, senior defensive lineman Danny Tanielu-Talilulu and senior kicker Ricardo Parra.
San Pedro reached the quarterfinals of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoffs with a 43-18 victory over South Gate in the first round on November 13, then were eliminated by Marine League rival Narbonne of Harbor City, who is now in a CIF State Division I-A Bowl this Saturday after repeating as City Division I champion on December 5.
Senior quarterback Jacob Miller (78-of-147, 1,056 yards, 15 TDs, 5 INTs) made All-Marine League second team offense along with the offensive line trio of junior Nicolas Ford and seniors Juan Campuzano and Vince Amalfitano. Making All-Marine League second team defense is senior defensive linemen Donte Huddleston and Vincent Wood, junior linebacker Sohl Gafa and sophomore defensive back Corey Fausto.
San Pedro gained 3,546 total yards and scored 44 touchdowns (27 rushing, 17 passing) on offense, while Frazier Jr., Wood, Tanielu-Talilulu and Zabatta all scored on defense to go along with Frazier Jr.’s two punt return touchdowns, an even 50 touchdowns total for the 2015 Pirates.
Meanwhile, Mary Star senior running back William Davis was named the Offensive Player Of The Year for the Santa Fe League after posting monster-like numbers for the Stars (6-5 overall in 2015), rushing for 1,548 yards and 16 touchdowns on 171 carries, averaging a blistering 9.1 yards per carry.
Overall, the Stars ran for 3,586 yards and 45 touchdowns on 504 carries as a team in first-year coach Jason Gelber’s run-based no-huddle attack, gaining 4,040 yards of total offense and 49 total touchdowns for the season alone.
Davis headlines the Stars’ All-Santa Fe League first team selections alongside senior RB/LB Vinny Lauro, who also ran for 1,028 yards and 16 touchdowns on 149 carries, senior RB/DB/K Jarod Alves, junior defensive lineman Daichi Kusunoki and senior offensive lineman Anthony Garcia. Fellow senior offensive lineman Anthony Castagnola, junior defensive lineman Izzy Amalfitano and junior defensive back Jaime Casiano Jr. are All-Santa Fe League second team selections.
Mary Star lost in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Section East Valley Division playoffs to powerhouse Grace Brethren of Simi Valley, who two weeks after forfeited their chance at a championship after a semifinal victory due to admitted use of an ineligible player, putting an unfortunate damper on the Stars’ encouraging 2015 season.
