The San Pedro High girls basketball team was able to persevere through a mid-season coaching change during the 2012-2013 season to garner a playoff spot in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoffs, and were rewarded with two All-Marine League selections.
For the second straight year, sophomore guard Rita Fiorenza (#2) was a unanimous choice for a first-team All-Marine League selection after leading the Pirates in scoring, assists and steals. Fiorenza scored in double digits in 90% of San Pedro's games despite missing most of the league games due to bronchitis.
In one game against Elizabeth Learning Center, Fiorenza had 23 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 blocks.
Junior guard/forward Cheyenne Alvarez (#13) was chosen on the second-team All-Marine League for her first honor as such in her two years on varsity. Alvarez scored 16 points in the win over Elizabeth Learning Center, and in one of her best moments she scored 12 points in a loss to eventual Marine League and City Section champion Narbonne of Harbor City, scoring 8 points in the first quarter which gave the Lady Pirates a brief 8-6 lead.
Alvarez was San Pedro's second leading scorer and rebounder.
Overall, the entire team had the highest grade point average of all the Marine League schools with a 3.2 GPA, following up on the outstanding efforts in the classroom of both the City champion girls cross-country and girls soccer teams at San Pedro.
