REDONDO BEACH – The San Pedro High football team once again found themselves in another tough battle with a CIF-Southern Section opponent, and this time it was with host Redondo Union of Redondo Beach. Gearing up to stop the Sea Hawks’ run game was a good idea, and was successful but…
All that did was free up Redondo junior wide receiver Warren Jackson, and quarterback Jacob Silvera found him early, often, and repeatedly to the tune of 11 catches for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns to power the Sea Hawks to a 25-14 victory over San Pedro, dropping the Pirates to 1-2 overall for the first time since 2005 team that responded by winning their next eight games and a Marine League title.
The offense of San Pedro only had a couple scoring drives against a stout Redondo (3-0) defense, starting with an 11-play, 68-yard drive from midway through the first quarter that carried over into the second play of the second period, which ended the drive with sophomore running back Sean Davenport’s two-yard touchdown run that knotted the score at 7-7 with 11:14 remaining in the quarter.
San Pedro’s defense appeared to catch a break when a bad snap caused Redondo to lose 20 yards, but on the very next play, Silvera spotted wideout Jerone Jackson on the run, hitting him with a perfect pass over the top for a 75-yard touchdown and a 14-7 Redondo advantage.
Redondo kicker Trevor Bowens hit a 42-yard field goal late, and the Sea Hawks took a 17-7 lead into the locker room at the half.
On the first play of the third quarter, San Pedro senior running back Brian Halsey’s 36-yard run up the middle appeared to give the Pirates’ new life, and it eventually led to senior wideout Antonio ‘A.J.’ Frazier Jr.’s seven-yard touchdown run off a fly sweep that cut the Sea Hawks’ lead down to 17-14 on a 66-yard drive that only needed six plays.
Redondo would respond on the next drive as Warren Jackson’s 38-yard reception set up his own 13-yard touchdown catch off a fade pass from Silvera late in the third quarter for a 23-14 lead after Bowens missed the PAT kick.
The fourth quarter saw the Pirates play sloppy, with one bad snap leading to a safety, and a lost fumble on the final play of the game by junior quarterback Austin Jackson, who passed for 54 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Halsey led the Pirates’ ground game with 72 yards rushing on ten carries, but Redondo’s defense limited the Pirates to 132 rushing yards.
Despite giving up 300 yards through the air by Silvera, San Pedro still managed to achieve some great moments on defense.
Senior defensive linemen Mike Spinosa and Donte Huddleston each recorded a sack. Huddleston also swatted a pass away at the line of scrimmage in the third quarter, and sophomore defensive back Corey Fausto recovered a fumble inside the San Pedro 10-yard line with under two minutes remaining in the game. In all, San Pedro held Redondo to 42 yards rushing.
Next up for the Pirates is another intersectional battle with Culver City at home next Friday. The Centaurs (1-1) defeated Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates, 41-28.
